What's the weirdest thing you've seen in the Military?

If someone salutes me somewhere, I would rather just return it before I a)look like a jerk for not returning a salute or b) stop and spend a few minutes on the difference between an officer and an officer candidate. Since I'm not in OCS, I don't expect to find any Marine DIs strolling about behind me.

About to start Tac phase in the Herc.
During API, some Marine 1LT student started *****ing at me because I didnt salute him (I was a 2LT.) "Hey, do you not see these silver bars?" I said "yeah, so." He asked if I was missing something and I said "I dont think so, I dont salute other Lts if thats what you are talking about." Seriously though, would any of you as an Ensign salute another student that was a JG?

If he had wings and I don't? Yes. Could be a SURGRAD, oh, and he has wings. A JG that just got promoted like, that day? Sure, why not. Normal day-to-day? No, unless maybe enlisted are around.

He'll dazzle you with terms like "Code Red."
I think there is a rule at TBS that student lieutenants salute O-3s and above, i.e. 2d lts don't salute 1st lts (I just remember this from one of the TBS briefs at OCS, so if this is wrong someone please correct me). The likely rationale is that some student lieutenants, mainly lawyers that got commissioned before or during law school (e.g. me), go to TBS as 1st lts, so having to salute other students regularly would be strange.

"rank among junior officers is like virtue among whores"
ever heard that?

ya.... I think I'd laugh in the face of any 1stLt who tried to make a 2nd salute him... and then tell the 2nd to tell him to f-off. what a douche. I don't care if he has wings or not.

Yeah, agree 100%. I think it was said in another thread - what's he going to do? Tell his CO and look like an idiot? When I was in the TRACOM, I would secretly wish for stuff like that to happen so I could tell the guys off, but, alas, it was not meant to be.

When I was at TBS (yes, the earth was just cooling), they made a HUGE deal about saluting and giving respect to the small number of 1stLt instructors there. If you weren't sure the guy was a lawyer, you'd better have saluted.

I am a JG with wings, and I would laugh my ass off if an ENS saluted me. In aviation, not sure about SWOdom, once you finish advanced... O-1 through O-3 are all Junior officers (at least in my community). I have been laughed at for saluting LT's who are instructors or fleet pilots.

For the most part, O1-O3 is mostly a first name basis as well.

There is (was?) a SURGRAD here who was a JG. You wanna be the one to blow off an IP?

Killin' the Chief

Was on a Midshipman cruise on USS Farragut (DDG-37) in '79. Had an old retired Chief who had passed on and requested burial at sea (civilian mortuary prepared the body/coffin). We cleared VACAPES, did the ceremony, dumped the coffin from under the flag and it.......floated. Ships XO brought us around and told the ceremonial firing squad to sink the box. 7 guys with full (20) round mags of 7.62mm firing from a distance of maybe 30 ft. Boxed ripped open, bag ripped open..poor chief is floating there with half his head gone..... and that is how we left him when the XO saw what they had done! GO NAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!
