I’ll go ahead and say it: besides a few minutes of Ermey, FMJ was a dumb movie
I enjoyed it. I like Kubrick and, much like Joker and his peace-button, I enjoy thinking about the weird duality of man. It has always seemed ironic to me though that the film, which is largely not pro-war and is rather anti-war at times, has become so vastly popular as a war film and as a depiction of the USMC. I don't think it was intended to portray us in a particularly positive light. Maybe that sort of proves some point about how we're all sort of conditioned or at least amenable to the seduction of power and violence.
Interesting tidbit. The Hue scene was actually filmed ... in East London.
