As the topic title would indicate, this question is about why people select the airframe that they do. I mean, I'm in no way making sport of a person choosing to fly helos or P-3s and such, but I'd really just like to know why the people that have done so selected that before something else. Is it the aircraft itself that drew you into the community or the role it plays in the greater combat theory? If I offended anybody that feels that I have shown disrespect toward their choice of service, I apologize.
 
I won't go into detail but I entered the Navy flight program for the wrong reasons. Though that desire probably got me through college and NROTC so it paid off in the end. When it came time for selection at the end of primary, my thought process was simple, being a Navy pilot meant flying off aircraft carriers. Afterall that's what seperates your typical Navy flier from the rest of the pack. So I put Jets, E2/C2, Props. I finished 7 out of 21 and ended up in the E2/C2 pipeline (believe me, deep down, I really had no desire for that community). I then ended up in C-2's based solely on my desire to go west coast since I grew up in So Cal. The only slots available on the west at the time were two C-2 slots. It's accepted that most people end up enjoying what they fly and what they do. At first I was an unhappy camper but good things came out of where I went. I had a great time in advanced flying T-2C's out of VT-4 in P-cola. I was a part of the last pilot class to get winged in P-cola as well. Flying C-2's in the fleet and at the FRS has been great. The community grew on me and I wouldn't change a thing. No regrets. Anyway, that's how I ended up in the carrier prop community.

this question has also been asked a great many times before. Rather than wiat for everyone to respnd, try searching the forums, and I am sure you will get more info quicker.
 
I put helos first, jets second, props last. I always figured you should be able to see the guy you're about to kill. It's only sporting, after all.
 
as a wise primary sim instructor told me, if you can't go mach 1.0 you'd better have a million dollar life insurance policy. that way, if and when you are shot down by some terrorist with a shoulder launched stinger missile, your wife will be rich and one of your squadron buddies will marry her. so, i put jets, and i'm headed to kingsville next month. i can't afford a million dollars in life insurance.

Adam I'm really not sure what the hell your sim instructor was saying. I guess you can't get shot down going Mach 1+ ?? Good luck finding anyone who will ensure you as a Naval aviator, at least while your flying. Congrats and good luck to you in Kingsville.

This question has been asked a great many times, but it's been done so in a great many different topics. It's much easier to consolidate one resource than spread it out, thus this thread was born. On an unrelated note, learn to spell. "Wiat"? "Respnd"?

I was not trying to bash you, just thought it would be easier to look at the previous posts. Also, so sorry if my spelling is of such a great concern for you. Some of us have more important things to do, then to ensure our grammar is perfect!

It is a lot easier to get good info out of people, when you don't come back as a snotty kid.
 
So answering with a condescending non-answer is much better? I don't care enough to go into detail on this, just stop hijacking my topic. I asked a reasonable question and if you're not mature enough to answer, that's fine, just keep your non-answer to yourself.
 
whatever kid, it was not a non-answer, it was meant to point you toward a wealth of info.
 
I joined the Navy to fly. The Navy has boats. Put the 2 together and you have flying off of boats! A natural choice if you ask me...(Although whoever thought of landing on a boat, at night, in the goo ought to be shot. but that's another story!)

All kidding aside, The Jet community is the one that I had always been attracted to. I grew up flying with my old man, watching Top Gun, and Discovery Wings.

When someone is polite enough to answer a question that has been answered many times before and point you in the right direction to more info you should say thank you not make fun of them. Show some respect. When I ask a question I appreciate when someone helps me out. Thanks for the spelling lesson, could you please proof read mine and get back to me.

If you read his post, it isn't written in a polite tone. If he wanted to help he could have suggested a thread to look in or even something general to search for. Take a look at the main board, see how many topics there are? Can you imagine how long it would take for a person to search through each and every thread in each and every topic? If you're trying to call what he did, "helping somebody out" then I truly pity you and admire what little, not to mention slightly hostile, "help" you must be working with.
By the way, there should be a comma after "thank you" and before "not make fun of them.
 
kid if you even make it into the program, you are going to have a real rough time. It was meant in all helpfulness. There was no ill-will meant. There was nothing rude in the post, it was simply meant to get you some solid info, in a quicker amount of time.

This post is over a week old, you have less than 10 replies that talk about selection. The other posts have a TON of opinions of why people selected what they did. Now, I know it would have required a little work on your part to find the different forums, but I strongly DOUBT IT WOULD TAKE A WEEK OF SEARCHING.

All that was meant was to let you know that there is a lot of existing posts out there, seeing as you seemed like a new member.
