What is it like to be an NFO?

Traditionally, only the top performers in Basic NFO flight training would be selected for the fighter (RIO) Advanced training pipeline. There was a natural symmetry there because only the top student pilots were selected for fighters also.
Complete bullshit. Enjoy your fantasies ... but you're dealing w/ guys who have "been there" on this forum: ATTACK, FIGHTER, "Q", PATROL, HELO, "LOG", single seat, multi-crew, front seat, back seat, left seat, right seat; in fact ... ALL the seats that sit behind the main CB panel. What year did you say you got YOUR Navy Wings of Gold .... ??? :)
.... It should be noted here that although tactical jet NFOs once served as squadron Landing Signal Officers (LSOs), this particular position has been filled exclusively by pilots for some time ... the E-2 and EA-6B NFO communities -- I flew alongside them for years
It SHOULD be noted that this is ALSO complete bullshit, especially during the "tactical jet" time frames when we've been flying the "E-2 and EA-6B" ... unless you can direct me to the squadron and year(s) you claim this happened OR unless you're talkin' V/STOL "LSO's" ... then mebbe if we're talkin' semantics ... but why would those 'Rons have an "NFO" in a squadron billet, serving as LSO ... (?) ... then I'll eat it. And for the record, I worked w/ USMC LSO's quite a bit and "beached" the head USMC LSO at one time ... :)
..... when I was in VT-86, three experienced fleet attack pilots who had lost their pilot status for visual reasons wound up in the (then) RIO syllabus as they wanted to become Fighter RIOs. A few weeks in, they told anyone who would listen that it was by far the most difficult flying training they had ever experienced. The VT-86 RIO pipeline had at that time the highest attrition rate in the Naval Air Training Command......
Also complete bullshit -- this time, just in one man's opinion :) -- as you should speak to the A-6 B/N's who were former "experienced fleet attack pilots who had lost their pilot status" .... unless, of course -- once again, you would care to point out years, former attack communities, and/or names via PM ... then I "might" entertain your fantasies AND eat my words ... :)

Quite a first post to be full of so much bullshit and put out so much bad information. Why do you "prepare" it offline??

Where DO we get such men .... ???

He wasn't talking V/STOL LSOs, or if he was he's even more out to lunch- I've yet to hear of an NFO in the Harrier community!

Again, I will eat shit & howl at the moon if I'm wrong ... but I "KNOW" the LSO community. :)

I would much rather be a BN than a RIO. How many BN's dropped ordnance in combat? How many RIO's shot down MIG's in combat? Retorical question. "Fighter pilots make movies, bomber pilots make history"

..........
You will notice I said fighter/attack. Didn't shootdown any Migs, dropped a lot of bombs.

How many bombs did you drop in the S-3?:D

Ok... my two cents..
In late '71/early '72 at VT-10, selections were a combo of needs of the Navy and what you wanted. At this time, students really didn't know much about the various communities (except for the couple of P-3 NESEPS who knew what they wanted), so we were at the mercy of the instructors there. The cool guys flew cool aircraft, so a lot of the class wanted A-6s because the couple of F-4 RIO instructors were dips and the couple of A-6 B/Ns were "cool guys." The E-1/E-2 community was represented by a very bitter LCDR-for-life... and NO ONE wanted to end up like him. Right around selection time, the "needs of the Navy" came into the picture as the F-4 community, after getting the dregs of the classes for the past couple of years, cleared up the pools at Miramar and Oceana and there was a HUGE vacuum for RIO students. Instead of sending three or four guys... my class sent about 15 guys... not matter what they wanted. When I checked into Glynco, there was a guy from the VT-10 class just after mine there at the check-in line. His first words were: "I really wanted P-3s." .... he didn't last long.

I gotta say sumthin' here

Roger that; I was just tryin' to give him some "wiggle room" ... :D

Again, I will eat shit & howl at the moon if I'm wrong ... but I "KNOW" the LSO community. :)

I always enjoy A4s commentaries. I don't recall ever witnessing such a verbal explosion from him. I don't disagree with any of his remarks. I would simply add the following benign comments: ;)

NFO LSOs - I vaguely remember hearing a VT-10 NFO intructor mentioning it one time. He did not have any specifics and did not dwell on it. At the time, none of us knew what an LSO was. And Hornets were still on the drawing boards back then. :D

Timing&Needs of - This makes a mockery of anyone who would assert that all the top guys go to this platform or that. Nobody knows that.

Graybeard - Kind of unfortunate that he took several broadsides in this forum. Say hi to the new guy ...

Nevertheless, hats off to A4s. He is a sage. Read and Heed Him! :icon_smil
