What is a “mustang”

What exactly defines a mustang in the navy? I am prior enlisted. Did 8 years active, got out to attend college (wasn’t really able to do it while active) finished in 3 years. Got selected for OCS. Would I be considered a mustang since I didn’t get LDO or something similar? I know it doesn’t really matter much at all. Just curious more than anything.

Yes. A mustang is one who broke free from the pack. Prior enlisted officers, regardless of commissioning source or path, are considered mustangs.

Remain humble, kind, and always remember where you came from.

BTW, O-1E/O-2E/O-3E is a nice pay scale.

While “mustang” is often affiliated with LDOs and Warrants, by definition a mustang is a commissioned officer with any prior enlisted service.

Debating whether you’re considered a mustang or not should probably be the least of your worries as you prep for OCS.
