What degree should I get to become a pilot?

Hi I'm new here and I have a question about what college degree I should earn in order to be selected to be a pilot. If I join NROTC while I'm in college does it matter what kind of degree I should work toward?? I'm trying to narrow down my options then decide how I should pursue my goal of becoming a pilot.

Thanks,

Daniel

No... so long as its a degree that's accepted by the Navy.

I've got friends down here in P-Cola that are anything from Poli-Sci and History majors to Aerosnautical and Mechanical Engineers. I'm a Comp=-Sci guy.. my roommate's a history major. I've got another friend that's a nuc-engineer...

Find something that interests you, you're decent at and is accepted by NROTC... better to do well as a history major than suck @ss as an aeronautical engineer.

Do something you enjoy. If you enjoy what you're doing then you will do well and get good grades. Technical majors get a small boost at selection time, but I don't think it is that big a deal.

Thanks for the advice guys!!!

I enjoy History and have always gotten A's in the subject. Meanwhile, my math grades have been O.K. but I would feel better with a history major. Is their a certain math-level pilots should have?? I'm in Pre-Calculus right now and I hate it with a passion. An engineering degree I think I would probably struggle in, well history major here I come.

Definitely agree with the do what you love. I am a marine engineering systems major (think boat design) and I still manage to figure out all of this funny stuff that pertains to planes. Granted it would be easier if I had a background in Aero or something...but God forbid you don't make it through the program you want something you can fall back on.

I concur with the above: find something you are good at and enjoy. Being interested in your major is the most important part. As for the math stuff, you can always take electives (your college will probably require you to) outside of your major.

I did my undergrad in three engineering disciplines, (read: lots of BS, Bach. Sci.), but I actually got to enjoying :D . I would not consider myself to be a great mathametician, but if you are interested in what you are learning, it makes all of the difference. I even went on for advanced degrees.

Also consider that enginerds are not known for their social skills or good lookin' women (although every once in a while one will blow you away).

My major is history and I got selected for pilot. So long as your grades are good, it doesn't matter a whole lot. There are other things that factor into your overall selection score.

Selection and getting into programs aside, the only math you need in the cockpit is basic arithmetic.

Just bit more info on the needs of math... If you NROTC or Academy, you're going to be required to take several semesters of calculus. For NROTC, you're required to have completed Calc 1 and 2 as well as Physics w/ Calc 1 and 2. They don't care how you do it, so AP credits count. Otherwise, agree with what everyone else is saying. Choose something you enjoy.

That relieved me alot right now. I thought pilots had to be mathematician's for some reason.

If I don't make it into pilot training, can I still get another job in the Navy that's aviation related?

Thanks,

Daniel
