It was explained to me that all of the free-range chickens walking about Kauai are a result of Iniki. The storm "liberated" countless birds and they ended up just becoming feral.
That’s definitely part of the lore, and probably true to an extent, though there were chickens before Iniki, and on the other islands. Kauai does seem to have the most.

Pretty good winds on the Eastern seaboard today, as that nor’easter spins up. Almost 50 knot gusts on the bombing range there.

There is a guy who lives on York Point, in Yorktown, that opens his house to windsurfers a few times a year, and any time a storm is brewing. People from all over the world go to windsurf there- some to try to break the world speed record. 50kts is a lot, but I bet there are a few windsurfers out there chasing the dream.
My limit at my best was about 30-35kts. I didn't have a sail small enough and I wasn't good enough to depower quickly so I'd fly like a ball stuck in a trebuchet. I broke more than one board doing that.

Funny thing is that he's way more popular abroad. But so is the sport, so it makes sense.

Reminded how nice the Yorktown area and James River is on my return motorcycle trip from Norva and VA Beach.

I did a lot of work when I was with NPS at Yorktown and other sites on the Colonial Parkway. It is a lovely area but I fear it’s growing way too fast.
And it's orange barrel central!!!!!

My first home I ever purchased at 304 Appaloosa Drive in Yorktown was still there although quite ratty looking! ($68k in late 1988). Maintained as a rental of for years after pcs move.PXL_20250904_152703963.jpg

Slept through that in a tent on Staten Island on Sunday night, not my tent and not fun. Not my tent because my 40 year old hand-me-down was leaking like a sieve, the retired Army Infantry Colonel's tent I crashed in didn't move a millimeter and the $200 cot I slept in was almost as good as a bed. The half a dozen branches that ended up crashing in the campsite through the night weren't cool though.

It was quite the capstone to a weekend of herding a dozen scouts around NYC.

Observing the wildlife? So to speak?

Honestly, it was kinda tame with only a few really 'interesting' sights and a single rat spotted in a subway station.

Overall it was more like trying to herd semi-feral cats. Most of the scouts were fine, though they all needed nearly constant attention on the streets to make sure they stayed with the herd. One in particular though...at one point the other scouts who were sent to retrieve him from a Chinese grocer told me that he refused to leave, I walk in to find him arguing with the cashier over prices. This was after he tried to buy a live lobster, no idea what his plans were after that. The little idiot had a problem with being told no.

You were closer to Langley AFB than anything navy! Did you travel the Hampton Bridge every day?

I did - we got a great deal on a new build condo which is what drove the location. In hindsight we just should have rented in Chics Beach or Gent or Va Beach from an outgoing squadron mate. But we did well income wise renting to AF folks at Langley. That bridge-tunnel drive sucked. Which is why I was constantly shamed for missing FOD walkdowns lol.

Having lived in Hampton as a kid right next to Langley, I cannot imagine commuting every day to Oceana.
