Is any body on this forum from any of military college other than the service academy. How do you guys go about commissioning assuming you were going the Marine Corp route. Do you guys do the same thing the ROTC guys do and also what kind of packages do you guys turn in as far as acceptance boards, are you guranteed Aviation and law and all that good stuff? Give me the whole gist of how it works on your end. I will like to know. Are there quotas as to how many guys can go into the various branches of service.
Thanks

I am from VMI. I had a full scholarship so I was guaranteed a commission and had everything paid for while at VMI. You are required to do all the classes and FTX's and such and then you put in your package just like everyone else when it comes to jobs. However as far as the Navy goes, when they rank your packet, they factor in schools and major...so Engineers get extra points, as do certain schools which are known to be "more difficult." VMI is 100% for getting flight slots for Navy guys that have wanted them in the last 14 years or so. Even if you dont have a scholarship, at VMI you are required to do one of the ROTC's, whether you commission or not. Some of the guys in Navy ROTC actually didnt want to commission. In fact, 2 in my class chose to go through OCS about a year after graduating and both got flight slots.

There is a certain number of flight slots that the Navy as a whole allows for ROTC's to send in. Each school doesnt have a specific number of slots, so when you put in your packet, you are up against all the other ROTC people.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

The route for the Citadel is the same as VMI. NROTC was the smallest of the 3 ROTC's and we got a little bit more attention from our instructors than the huge Army and AF units. We usually graduated about 10 Nayv guys a year and 15 Marines. Most guys got what they wanted, including flight slots. But they made sure the guys were qualified for them, that is where the extra attention helped out.

Lowflier, is LT Powell still at VMI? I went through flight school with him.

Actually he just finished his duty there last month. I still keep in touch with him through email though. He was an awesome ROTC instructor! I had a great time flying my cross country back up there with Lt. Bourn, another VMI grad, and hanging out with them both.

He went civilian. He was looking into transferring platforms, but I think they wanted him to go P-3 and he definately didnt want that. Lt. Bourn is still an instructor with VT-27, I believe he still has another year or so there. Its pretty cool how everyone knows everyone else.

I'm in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, it's pretty much like what people above have described for VMI and the Citadel.

You're daisy if you do.
Flash: The Citadel NROTC has grown since you have been there. This May we commisioned about 15 Navy and 25 Marines. This past Dec we commisioned about 10 Navy and 15 Marines.

When did you attend?

Glad to hear that we have grown so much, I felt outnumbered with all the Army hu-uahs and the AF fruitcakes. I presume the Dec grads were mostly STA-21 and MECEP types, hardly any cadets graduated then.

I graduated in '96. I am now starting to feel old :( . By the way, is LT Harbour (spelling?) still there? I was in a squadorn with him.

Yeah I know what you mean. Just to kind of boggle your mind a bit more... we have just under 40 STA-21 guys now! We are almost as big as the MECEP's! :icon_lol:

As for LT Harbough, yeah he's still here. You know, doin a lot of nothing... waiting to get out. Nice guy, do anything for you. He got in a bad wreck about 6 mo. ago but he's doin fine now. :clover_12
