Thanks alot man, I can't believe I didnt hear about that being so close. My dad is in the CAP too but I guess since they didnt really need to find him or anything just weird we didnt hear anything about it. Glad the pilot is ok though.

Just to make sure you didn't think this was recent or anything; This did occur in March of '04 (Squadron decommissioned on June 30 2004).

I enjoyed reading the comments regarding how the "Returning from a NASCAR Flyover the Day before is a cover-up!"

If they had watched the beginning of the race; It showed the flyover and even listed the squadron. Gotta love the Tin-Foil Hat Folk. :icon_wink

What a shame...They returned from OIF not too long ago, just read the article in the Spring Hook. Atleast they went over and got some before closing their doors.

They were there from March-Sept 2005. First USMC Reserve Fighter Squadron to be activated since Korea.

Couple jets still on hand for another week or so for the MAG Shutdown ceremony... :(

VMFA-142 Plane 200

On Tuesday, June17, 2008 I had the great pleasure to meet the commanding officier of VMFA-142, LtCol Tracy 'BC' Farris, at NAS Atlanta.
I had previously supplied him with copies of my photos of the Flying Gators ceremonial last flight. LtCol Farris agreed to bring me onto the base, so that I could take some photos of plane 200 before the Flying Gators paint scheme is stripped off the plane on Monday, 6/23 before it is transferred to VMFA-112 on 6/24.
Just as we reached the flight line, Maj. Don 'Chuckie' Nolan had taxied the plane out to the runway for the actual last flight of it in the Flying Gators colors. I was able to catch photos of it taking off and landing a bit later. The last flight was a maintenance check flight.

After the maintenance check flight of plane 200, to make sure it was working right for the transfer to VMFA-112, LtCol Farris (on left) and Maj Nolan kid arround.

I was able to get LtCol Farris to pose in the cockpit of plane 200

Here are a couple of photos of plane 200. It will hurt to see this colorful paint scheme stripped from the plane and I hope these photos will help preserve the Flying Gators in everyone's memory.

VMFA-142 Flying Gators Plane 200

While waiting for plane 200 to finish the maintenance check flight, I was able to take a few photos of plane 202. Plane 200 and 202 are the last two planes in the VMFA-142 Flying Gators paint. They are scheduled to be stripped on 6/23/08 and delivered to VMFA-112 on 6/24. I found out from LtCol Farris that a former VMFA-142 plane had been reassigned to the Navy Blue Angels. So when we watch the Blue Angels perform in the future, at least a plane from VMFA-142 will be there, even if it is in Blue Angels paint.

It is sad to see another Marine Reserve squadron go.

For those that think Marine Reserves are quitters - it's important to know that over 50% of the Marines in WWII were reserves, and that when Korea rolled it, it was the reserves that answered the call (active duty couldn't flush out a full division). In terms of reserve squadrons, VMFA-321 (a reserve squadron) was the first squadron to fly CAP over DC, and damn near all reserve squadrons have been to Iraq at this point. Semper Fi Gators, Semper Fi...
