Vehicle Registration....

Here's the deal... I'm buying a new jet ski... have so much time stashed down here in PCola... So my choice is to buy it here in PCola at 7.5% tax or just across the border in Gulf Shores, AL where the tax is 4.25%. I am trying to keep my tax as low as possible... that 3.25% difference is alot when you're talking about $9000 in product.

I can't find it on the AL website, but I heard that being in the service, we are allowed to have our vehicles registered in any state? I'm now a FL resident w/ my car registered in MD still. Or should I just license the jetski in AL and then re-register the trailer in FL?

If you are a FL resident then they are going to make you pay the difference in sales tax. I could be wrong, but thats what came up when I was going to buy a car from there. I don't think it matters where it is registered, just the state that you are a resident of! but then again, someone else might know more than I =)

I'm not sure about what High said, but another thing to consider is whether or not FL/AL considers a jetski under luxury/property tax each year. I don't know either state's tax laws, but I do know that some states charge luxury/property taxes on things such as cars, boats, etc. Something you might want to look into as well.

I thought FL doesn't have state tax?? I'm from CA and I plan on changing my residency to FL before the end of the year just so I can save on the taxes.

Florida has no INCOME tax. They have other taxes, such as sales tax, intangible property tax, etc

Crap, maybe that's what I was thinking of.

I'm not sure WHAT the intangible property tax is. I know it doesn't apply to me, and I don't think it's an excise tax (use tax), since Id on't get charged for it. Is a luxury tax an excise tax?

Shouldn't you be getting laid or something?

This website is a good source on info regarding Florida taxes:

Thanks for that link, Chief. I could have sworn there was a luxury tax, like on big ticket items (boats, airplanes, etc). I thought this was an issue for my parents when they had an airplane when I was younger. I guess I must have misunderstood something.

Perhaps you were thinking Federal, related to the "Read my Lips .. No new Taxes" promise. (Bush1). That cost him a second term (along with Ross Perot).

In 1990 he signed the tax increase with included a luxury tax on cars, yatchs and etc. The original threshold was for cars that cost over $30,000, increased to $40,000 in mid 90's. The tax expired January 1, 2003, without fanfare. Do not exactly remember details of the taxes on the other items.

I am not sure of a Florida luxury tax, but that statement is meaningless as I am certainly no expert.:icon_mi_1

The funny part is when he had to increase taxes, he knew he was screwing away his second term.
