Vehicle purchase on deployment?

I'm looking to make another motorcycle purchase in the next few months, probably a Harley. Any one ever bought a bike while on deployment? I remember seeing a Harley rep as well as a Ford rep in a trailer while I was in Al Asad last, but never went in. I have a Gunny that I know purchased a HD from them while we were there and will hit him up for info as well. Just curious if there's a good deal to be found doing it that way or not. I'll probably end up buying used if that's not an option. Resale value on HD is very good, so it's not like owners take a hit when buying off the showroom and reselling. However, I look to benefit from their expenditures on accessories (chrome, saddlebags, etc).

I bought a car in 03. Just remember you have to pay the tax on it when it is delivered in the states. I had a good experience. I picked out all the options I wanted, got 6k off the price, and had my wife pick it up at the dealership 3 months later. Oh yeah, you picked a good time to buy. There are usually a lot of great year end deals around this time. They add (I should say they used to) the manufacturers discounts on top of the military discounts plus end of year discounts.

I bought a HD and Chevy from the overseas car sales the NEX offers when you are deployed.

They were both a good deal. It helps if your really hate haggling with dealers, too.

Haven't ever done it myself....but one of my chiefs did while we were on a patrol. He seemed pretty happy with the results.

Got a fully loaded Mazda RX-8 for a fair bit off...north of 7K if I remember right...Seemed like a pretty good deal over all.

Good luck getting it to work out for you!!

Schnugg, what did you end up saving by doing it that way? Were you able to pick from their full lineup/all the bells and whistles? How did the whole process work?

I'm curious to see if it's kind of standard to save 6-8k, considering a new Harley costs as much as many cars.

On my Harley I saved about $3k from what the dealer was selling them for. The high end bikes certainly will save you a lot more $$$. I bought a 2001 XLC 1200. You can get the bike set up anyway HD would normally do it if you bought from a dealer. Also get an extended warranty as part of the deal.

I used HD of San Diego. No problems.

I believe all of the 'domestic' manufacturers are sold through the NEX/AAFES, including GM vehicles. Some of the marks like Volvo, owned by Ford, and a few of the 'special' vehicles like the Viper were not included when I was looking, but most everything else is.

The NEX program is not the only program available though. Some of the European manufacturers have their own military sales programs where they sell US spec vehicles to military overseas. I know BMW and Volvo have them and I think Mercedes does too, not sure about VW/Audi. I got about 17% off on my Volvo, built to order.

I did not have the easiest time finding info about them, though being in Saudi did not really help out. There are dealers that specialize in these kinds of sales in Europe, there were two offices right outside Rota for BMW and Volvo, but internet-wise it seems to depend on the company.

After a quick search this is what I found, a forum that came up said that there was only a 3% discount for Porsche's, still better than nothing. If you contact this dealer they might be able to give you more info.

Squeeze,

Unless you are stationed in Germany, Porsche does not have a military sales program that can help you. I asked the question while stationed in WESTPAC and was given a polite "nein". When I looked into it a few years ago, you had to take delivery of the car in Germany.

If you order a new Porsche in the US, I think the best you can hope for is about 6% off of MSRP. Porsches don't depreciate as bad as your average Buick, but they will still depreciate. Buying one that is a year or two year old can save you a fair amount of money.

Porsches aren't cheap, but they are worth the money. If I was not driving a Ford, I would probably have a P-car in my garage.

GM left the overseas sales program after MY '06. Ford and Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep are the only two auto manufactures offered through AAFES overseas sales. When we bought our '06 Expedition, the AAFES price was halfway between MSRP and Invoice before the rebates were applied. Same deal for the Taurus X I priced for the Mrs. in the summer of '07.

AAFES is a convenient service if you are overseas and want a new car waiting for you when you get home. You can find a better deal (i.e. closer to invoice pricing) if you work with a dealer in CONUS.

Waldo

Squeeze,

When I was on float in '03 I e-mailed Porsche to inquire about military sales. Yes, they said, we do that - and they included a pricing sheet. I compared it to their US pricing and they were identical?!? I e-mailed them back and asked if they had sent me the correct sheet as there didn't appear to be any difference in cost. They replied that the pricing was the same regardless of where I bought it, begged the question why they even called it a military sales program. Maybe, as Waldo described, there would be some advantage if you were stationed in Germany.

When I got home I bought a new leftover Boxster and paid 20% less than the sticker price. The key was shopping for a convertible in January. It was about 15degF when I dropped the top pulling out of the dealer in Connecticut - the saleswoman thought I was nuts but that's why I got seat heaters.

Cheers,
Vick

Vick,
Wow. You did well.

Squeeze,
Don't overthink this. You need that Cayman S. You're a young attack pilot. Money should mean nothing to you.

Best Regards,
Waldo
