Vegas lodging options

We're down in Vegas 70ish days a year, and we typically stay at either the Hilton Grand Vacations on Las Vegas Blvd (check the address, there are three separate HGVs) or the Marriott Grand Chateau (only one with that name). Both are usually pretty good with having a government rate available (or a military discount rate if you're not on orders). They both have suites with full kitchens for that rate, and you don't get gouged with an exorbitant resort fee (they do have fees, they just aren't that steep). I've had better luck going directly through the Hilton/Marriott websites then trying search engines. I've also noticed that the SLS usually has cheap rooms, it's a nice place, just out of the way at the north end of the strip, and it seems like they're discounting rooms to get more traffic. For you, it'll work because the monorail runs directly from SLS to the convention center (10 minute ride).

MGM also has a military only status (lifetime MLIFE Pearl, which gets you 15% off lodging, discounted food/drink, shows, free parking, and some additional perks I can't remember). Unfortunately, you have to register in person at a players card desk (I think it's the same for Caesars), so it won't help you for a lodging discount this time.

Most large hotels have shuttle service (the ones I mentioned certainly do). If not, I'll second the Uber/Lyft suggestion.

You shouldn't need wheels, it's pretty easy to get from the convention center to the rest of the strip. As mentioned earlier, there's a monorail station directly in front of the convention center that runs from MGM Grand up to SLS.

Since it's Gatordev's thread and I've already threadjacked it two ways, might as well make it three:

"there's nothing on Earth like a genuine bona-fide electrified six-car monorail!"

Go with Marriott Grand Chateau if it is available. I stayed there a lot while working out of Nellis. Good place, close to everything, you can get a big suite with kitchen for longer stays, all at govt rate. You also get like 500 free rewards points each time you decline maid service if I recall correctly. If you don't care about actually being in a casino directly on the strip, it is one of the better bargains around, and easily within walking distance of that sort of thing.

Caesars uses id.me on their website, so you can get the discount instantly. I'd still recommend joining Total Rewards in person so you can get Platinum status and avoid the resort fee (before you check-in).

Caesars has a 10% military discount, and if you register for their players club, you'll get automatic platinum status which means no resort fees.

Right, but did Caesar actually live there?

There's an Embassy Suites just off the strip that's pretty good. It's about 2 blocks over from all the action. If you have a car, or don't mind Ubering around a bit, it's a good way to steer clear of the strip craziness and get a bit of a discount.
There's actually two. One further north by the Wynn, and one near the Hard Rock. Both are decent, or at least were a few years ago.

Thanks. The intent here is to have easy access to the convention center, hopefully without needing a car (which sounds like that's very doable). Getting to the nightlife is secondary and I can use other means (Uber, etc), so this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

I'll take a look. I won't be on cost orders, just using my job-hunting "leave" to go to this, so keeping cost down would be great.

Like CFAM mentioned, there are also the HGV's, similar value for money, slightly less fancy. There is one, right up by SLS that I have stayed at, which would be an easy cab to the convention center (that's the big pillbox looking building just north of the north strip right?)

So finally sitting down to book a room, but here's another question...

Should I try and grab a car at some point? I'll probably two half days (or 1/3 days) where I'd have time to go explore. Never really been anywhere in Vegas other than the strip, so being able to take an hour or two to go see something on the edge of town (or whatever) could be fun. Then again, I have no idea what traffic is like, so maybe nothing only takes an hour or two.

May not be worth the money, but I also hate heading out west and not being able to enjoy a little bit of the geography.

Yes if you're willing to explore places like the Hoover Dam, which I think is about 30-45 minutes away. Other than that, most of Vegas can be explored walking or Uber/Lyft.

Yes, check out the dam, also Red Rock canyon for some pretty cool hiking, if you're into that. I always find, having done many dets to Vegas, that if I don't get out and explore the surrounding nature, I start to go a little bit insane. Definitely get a car.
