USS George H.W. Bush underway

Habitual Waster of Time
CVA 58 was supposed to be the USS United States... Pres Harry Truman axed it. CVN 75 was then slated to be the USS United States....then it was renamed....you guessed it, USS Harry S. Truman. Same guy killed the same ship twice.

How did he manage to get a ship named after him? It seems fishy that a guy who spent his presidency hating on the Navy would get a ship named after him.

Name a ship the USS United States and im sure that would be target #1 for any potential enemy. Put a bullseye on it while your at it.

That actually has been a concern of some, it would be embarrassing from a morale perspective to have your nation's namesake sunk. Plus USS United States is a little redundant. ;)

Hitler changed the name of one of Germany's pocket battleships at the beginning of WWII from Deutschland to Lützow due to concerns about her possible loss.

Cruisers have more or less always been named for battles. Carriers picked up the tradition of being named for battles because Lex and Saratoga were converted from cruisers while under construction, but kept their names. The first carrier to be named for a president was FDR (CVB-42), originally named Coral Sea, but changed by Truman after FDR's death.

Incidentally, Truman was so named because he was one of Clinton's favorite presidents. I always figured, if they were going to name a boat after a Democrat who hated the Navy, why not Thomas Jefferson?

Not really. Cruisers were long named after cities, starting with the first 'modern' cruisers in the US Navy, the USS Charleston and the USS Baltimore. This tradition held throughout WWII when heavy cruisers were generally named after bigger cities and light cruisers after smaller ones.

The Lexington and the Saratoga were actually laid down as battlecruisers and were given hull numbers as such, CC-1 and CC-3. After the Washington Naval Conference they were converted to aircraft carriers thus establishing the custom of naming large fleet carriers after battles along with some after previous ships of the Navy (like the USS Ranger), though it was not always followed. When we finally built our only two battlecruisers (though we called them 'large cruisers, CB's) during WWII we named them after US territories, going along with the custom of naming battleships after states and cruisers after cities.

I have noticed that the Navy has been keeping some of the 'traditional' carrier names free, like Saratoga, Ranger and Lexington. I am guessing that some higher ups, like us, are hoping they use them for carrier names in the future. Though with the naming of LHA-6 as the USS America that might not hold true for much longer.
