HMS Warspite and Illustrious were my favorites.

But while we're at it, the Brits did have some real stinkers too, mostly in the DD department. Who wants to serve on the HMS Dainty?

Perhaps since McHales Navy is no longer around Barney Franks will be on the spring season? MSNBC, is to air it. :)

I'd love to see some of the "old school" carrier names be used again in the future. Naming them after battles of the Revolution is much better than living Presidents. But the CGs have taken over being named after battles, and even some old carrier names (Bunker Hill?).

Let's use:

Ben Franklin (again)
Hornet
Lex
Yorktown
Saratoga
Valley Forge

There's been what 7 Sara's so far? Sara 7 had the best OFFICIAL nickname, who's to fuck with "The Fighting Cock"? I guess the new and PC navy made her change to the "Super Sara", what bullshit. :(

America or Independence would be nice too. Come to think of it...we have yet to name a carrier the USS United States.

Harry S. Truman killed the USS United States, on two occasions.

Who decides ships' names?

I think it was Rickover who, when asked why subs were no longer named after fish, and were instead being named after cities (SSNs) and states (SSBNs) said,"Fish don't vote."

There used to be pretty strict rules about what ships of each class were named, but they've been relaxed to the point of near non-existence. Politics seem to be key. It is very appropriate to name a carrier after a naval aviator who became president, or even a sub after a submariner president (whatever you think of him, though I wish it was a class of ship normally named after a person) but I still think it's declasse to have living individuals with momuments to their greatness. Driving through West Viriginia, the number of Robert Byrd this-and-thats is appalling.

I thought the billboards telling people to brush their teeth twice a day was interesting enough... (they do exist)

come on now, leave my appalachian brethren alone. they're no worse than the billboards in P-Cola reminding people that "real men rock their babies...don't shake them" or something along those lines

Name a ship the USS United States and im sure that would be target #1 for any potential enemy. Put a bullseye on it while your at it.

No offense to the POTUS, but don't you think that would hold true for the USS George Bush being that H.W looks similar to W?

In fairness, since the Cole attack I don't think security would allow any individuals to do any real damage to a USN ship. It would take a stupid/ballsy nation to plan a real effective attack using either a torpedo or coordinated air attack. But then again I am optimistic and I don't think a nation would be that stupid to go to war/die; there fore,... I'm not worried about it.

CVA 58 was supposed to be the USS United States... Pres Harry Truman axed it. CVN 75 was then slated to be the USS United States....then it was renamed....you guessed it, USS Harry S. Truman. Same guy killed the same ship twice.

As if they aren't trying to find vulnerabilities and opportunities on any of our ships or installations. If the USS P.O.S. looked like a target, they'd take a shot.
