USS COLE RETURNS!

NORFOLK, Va. -- The USS Cole is heading to the Middle East for the first time since a terrorist bomb killed 17 sailors aboard the Navy ship in Yemen's port of Aden nearly six years ago.

The Norfolk-based guided missile destroyer is one of seven ships with 6,000 sailors and Marines leaving the East Coast next week to conduct security operations in support of the war on terrorism, the Navy announced Friday. They'll be gone six months.

Some ships will leave Tuesday, while others, including the Cole, will depart Thursday, said Lt. Mike Kafka, a spokesman for the Navy's Second Fleet, in Norfolk.

The ships will deploy to the Fifth Fleet's area of responsibility, which includes the Persian Gulf, Kafka said. He said he could not give details about where the ships will go, for security reasons.

Heh, I had orders to that ship prior to being picked up for STA-21 a year and a half ago. Good to see things are on the up and up with it.

My ship will probably end up refueling her at some point, no better high than DFM and JP-5.... yay for open soundings of tanks.

Boy they are going at the worst time of the year too, monsoon season out along Africa (after the Suez transit), and then the hotter than hell weather.

She deployed last summer to BALTOPS 2005. I remember on May 31st doing 16 landings on her to get the crew their flight deck pay. Also almost made an emergency landing there, but decided the CG was better single engine than the 30 degree offset approach to a FLT 1 DDG with the sloped deck.

Yea, I don't know why the media is making such a big deal about this. It's not like she's been out of commission all this time. I bet the average joe (read: aviator :D) thinks she just got repaired not to long ago.
