USS Benfold engineering casualty

So there are DDGs without hangars? TIL.
Years ago I was standing a SUWC watch while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, and some intel cell from the C5F staff pinged me in chat to ask if we could send our helo to investigate a sub contact. I informed them we as a Flight I DDG didn’t have an embarked helo. Probably some dumb 1830 Ensign.

These are the same ITCs that think a single MQ-9 can scan an 800NM by 500NM box in a single vul.

Wanted to close the loop on this. Turns out a helo assisted start is a wives tale. I'm kinda bummed about that as I always thought that was a cool way to possibly start a ship.

They flew over a huffer cart but couldn't get adequate air pressure for a start. In the end they used DC equipment, EBAC's to fill SCBA bottles which were used to fill the air flasks, one at a time. No idea how long that took but thats what they did. The batteries for the no break power supply for each GTG were dead so they took those to another ship to charge as well.

Sorry for the wives tale.

Thanks for the follow up.

In true SWO style, they kept it as painfully manual as possible. I am sure they’re proud.

Yep, sounds like the shipboard equivalent of manually pumping the APU accumulator.

EBACs burn fuel to run, so at least it’s not manual pumping. But I have no idea how many SCBA bottles they needed to charge and hump to the air flasks, so it still sounds absolutely miserable.

Wonder if they could’ve also used the torpedo tube air flasks…but those are some heavy fuckers.
