USS Benfold engineering casualty

I guy I know had an F18C gliding while on a bingo divert in the gulf back in the 2000s. Compounded from dumping too low to make max trap weight for a single engine (precautionary) arrestment, followed by the bolter and high throttle while attempt to tank on a bingo profile (BLUF, they had him dump below bingo and were up shit creek without a paddle so he diverted and tried to tank off a -F on the way or he would have flamed out).

APU saved his bacon as he was too slow to windmill start either motor. Great guy and one of his classic sayings was "man, it got REALLY quiet for about 45-60 seconds, I could hear my heart beating". APU got one motor going, he leveled out and got some gas from the -F (which watching the show and waiting to see him eject), and limped to the divert field, before forgetting his ship to shore checklist and taking his ride 3-wheeling off the runway with his anti-skid OFF and popped some tires.

Oh and he landed at the international airport in Bahrain if I recall correctly and had been an OIF spare, so he had bombs, bullets, and missiles.

He fucked up a lot of peoples day for sure.

I was on that cruise. That entire thing was crazy.

Which carrier was this?

I wasn't on the deployment but I served with him afterwards on short duty.

Must have been one in the Gulf from '05-08 timeframe, summertime. Legacy Baby hornet.

The mishap report / hazrep / whatever was interesting to read but his in person version was priceless.

"Better to be lucky than good!"

Yeah, it's one of those stories you hear about 2nd or 3rd hand and think "that can't have happened like that... ", but the pilot is one of those humorous types who can check his ego when talking aviation. Then he tells you about it in person and you are like damn bro, some skill and lotsa luck!

And in the end he saved the jet and his life. In aviation, we all know the line between Hero & Zero can be very, very thin - and the difference can end up being completely out of an individual's control.

I had forgotten this but on the flight deck there is a connection where we can use bleed air from a helo to start a GTG.

That begs the question...what would you hook up to on the helo? Unhook one of the cross-bleed tubes and route the air that way? Seems like that would take forever to charge or get a compressor turbine up to speed.

Not a helo expert, but I imagine it's like a huffer start in reverse. I can easily see how there would be enough bleed air from the helo to start a GTG, or at least an aux generator that lets you charge the main air accumulator. It's pretty smart if that's how it works.

Smarter than that would be having an electrically-started APU that provides starting air to the mains... I'm guessing later designs did that? Cold war-era tech didn't prioritize self-start capability (e.g. F-14, T-38, and many others).

SWOs being like they are, it wouldn't surprise me if they just had seaman Timmy blowing into a tube for four days though... ;)

Great question. The connections exist but doubtful the capability exists to do this today. Its not something I've ever seen or heard anyone attempt.
