Isn't the SSGN is basically the arsenal ship the Navy wanted, only far more devastating and practical?

I heard that rumor 8 years ago in ROTC when they were converting the boomers to TLAM boats; that can't still be true?
They have already converted a few SSBNs to SSGNs (TLAM subs). They can hold a ridiculous amount of missiles, but we don't have enough to keep them all filled all the time. We have four SSGNs and they can hold 154 Tomahawks each

EDIT: I actually don't know if we are planning on converting any more of them

It would have been something else to see all those Tomahawks flying out of the SSGN that shot them into Libya.

I had a SWO friend who was underway off the coast of Libya who's CO told them to look out to port at x time. It was an awesome sight, I'd hate to be on the receiving end.

too bad no pics.

Shortly after that I knew a LT escorting a tour in Kings Bay and was surprised the Florida? was back, the response was "they were out of certain items needed for their mission"

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this before at some point on the site, but part of getting older is telling the same story a bunch of times...

A det from my first squadron was flying in the gulf one night after OIF kicked off in '04. They were flying along and then all of a sudden a bright light and contrail erupted out of the water next to them and flew into the sky. They called back to the ASTAC and asked if there were any TLAM boxes nearby. The response was, of course, "Oh yeah, you're in one now."

"Think you could tells us how to get out of it!"

Ahh, frigates, and their world-class situational awareness.
