Hornets can go to burner on MRT shots after the cat strokes. Rhinos cannot. The pilots elect to do it about 100% of the time. It is an easy way to get CRT performance without burning 30 extra seconds of gas waiting for the Shooter to do his final checks. The flame happens about half the time and results from excess fuel in the dump system being "jarred" loose. It makes a loud pop as well.

So that is actually fuel venting out from the masts and being ignited by the exhaust then? I guess in a couple of those pics you can tell that the flame is a little higher up than the VENs.

That's what I have been told, anyway. Our airwing started draining the system in between goes, but it doesn't get done every time and it obviously can't happen during CQ.
