Our XO made an announcement today that as of 1 MAY 2005 everyone coming out of NROTC will be commissioned as USN rather than USNR.

He implied that this was a good thing, but it wasn't really clear what the difference is between the two. Does it really matter? Does it affect people in any tangible way down the road other than not having to augment?

For all practical purposes, no. The last time it mattered was when they had the drawdown in the early 90s. Some of the USNR guys got involuntarily separated while the regular USN guys didn't. I'm oversimplifying, but you get the point.

There was a thread a few weeks ago about this, search for "Dropping the R from USNR" and there was a link on one of the posts to the actual Navy message about it.

My understanding is that you will not have USNR on you name tag, but you will still be USNR. However, I am drunk off my ass right now, so I have no idea

Ok, so I have to wait till May 1, 2006 then?

Looks that way (for me too), but I guess that the 'guidance' on the 'statutary requirements' will be out at some future date. I assume that pretty much everyone who's not a bag of cr@p will be transitioned by May, 2006.

But then, you know what they say about assumptions ... :icon_tong

Nope, you heard wrong... ALL Commissioning sources will be USN Commissions.

Read the bold in the excerpt from the message below... (by the way, I just copied this from the message a few above yours so the answer was already there! :icon_tong )

Haha because my friend at the Academy didn't tell me it applied to everyone and he was making fun of me for being USNR, while he commissions USN, so now I can laugh back at him :-P
