Updated list of things to bring?

There are NFOs who think my natural smell is Gold Bond.

I would pour it on and sit down with a flop and cause a cloud. Drove the female NFO I flew with a lot crazy.

Gold Bond is medicated. I don't have fungal jungle junk. OCS may bring unforseen hardships, but for every day use do yourself a favor and get the J&J cornstarch with aloe and vitamin E. It sounds like some kind of magical elixir for rich women's hair, but NO! It's for the junk, son!

Sorry about that suggestion. I have no clue what I'm talking about. (I've only graduated from Parris Island and Quantico (both in the summer), after all...)

Have fun with your baby powder in Newport.

Nothing better than Gold Bond, and it makes you tingle.

I think I brought 4 extra pairs but it wouldn't hurt to have more. The issue ones really aren't bad. I still wear them all the time with my flight boots. If nothing else, having nice Cabelas ones or something similar make it much easier to find your socks when they are all thrown in with everyone else's laundry.

Can anyone from a recent graduated OCS class provide an updated list of items to bring, especially for women.
Everything I'm finding is a few years old and I'm not sure how relevant it is.

I should specify that I'm looking for suggested items to make life easier, and not what's already listed on the OCS website.

Extra set of running shoes so you can rotate between shoes ( they may, from time to time, get a little sandy or wet) extra socks and underwear, for the same reason.

Also, I would get your hair cut short so they are within regs without hair tie or pins, as I seem to remember ALL of the women in my class getting a short haircut upon arrival, and those women aren't exactly beauticians. One (the black female) went with a very short buzz cut, and the other (white female) bore a striking resemblance to Mikauly Culkin (the kid from Home Alone)

I'll be the jerk…kinda has become my billet description here.

Yeah, extra running shoes or whatever else is allowed, I guess, but here's what you REALLY need to bring:

  • A determination (e.g., "gut") to SUCCEED and DO THIS. It ain't easy…but everyone else who graduates has done it.
  • A level of physical preparation that will make that part successful.
  • A sense of humor…much of the "pressure" is really just "mind games".
  • A commitment to "cooperate and graduate". It's as much about your classmates as it is about you as an individual. You'll be better at "some stuff"…others will be better at "other stuff". Share the talent…as you surely will in the Fleet…however you eventually define that.
  • I gather you were about 12 years old on 9/11/2001…old enough to have retained a memory. Bring that with you as well.
May the force be with you...

R1 is dead on, sense of humor is critical. Believe it or not, drill instructors and RDCs are hilarious. Some of the things they say most people would pay money to listen to, and you will make a "stuff my DI says" list. And you have to be able to laugh at yourself, each other, and a situation. For example, our DI was TAD for quite a while, and once completely ripped us a new one over something via speakerphone. Some people had to leave the room because they were laughing at what a ridiculous situation it was. Another DI was on vacation with his family and supposedly RPTed his class over the phone.

I'll come back with some physical things to bring when I think of them. I'd definitely recommend putting something like an iPod, kindle, etc, in your lucky bag (bag you bring into OCS that gets stored: suitcase, duffel bag, etc) so that come candio phase you've got something to use in your down time. If you get stuck battalion staff and have to liase (escort) OCs to medical appointments you'll be glad you brought something to do.

For the prior enlisted guys is it OK to bring our own boots with us to same the break in period and expense of new ones if they are still in great shape.
