That's fair, and for the record I don't think he is a lunatic (don't know him personally). But I think (social) media and all these UFO "researchers" are really overemphasizing his experience level to suit their narratives.
This is what happens when notoriety is dangled in front of your nose. These guys like Fravor, Graves, and others, who don't have anything factual or meaningful to offer, get paraded around and put in front of cameras. Not exactly a situation where maintaining any semblance of objectivity is easy. These guys had experiences they couldn't explain. That's it. At some point, people start putting words in their mouths and they stopped caring because they felt important. That more people don't grasp this simple concept is disturbing.
A problem is you guys are also looking at this from the perspective of being highly experienced professionals with multiple decades of experience. The average person doesn't know anything about military aviation and thus has no way to gauge whether these guys are really experts or not.

Nothing will inflame conspiracy theorists like debunking their claims by saying it was all faked.
It only takes one enterprising JO, and a disinformation campaign goes halfway around the world before the truth can get its pants on.
If the read in hazing thing is true, while mildly hilarious, is insanely irresponsible. Having run tons of read ins, making sure people understand their limits is so damn important from a security perspective and that’s not the time to fuck with people.
And then we wonder why people don't get the seriousness of classified information and materials.
I do have a far fetched thought, what if it wasn't hazing, but actually seeing how far engineers and other could expand on ideas if they thought it was truly reverse engineering they were working on? Might not the product and process of that train of experimentation potentially be classified?

I’d agree with your speculation except when the article talks about how this was given to AD types. Most AD types who get read into fun facts are only there because of their billet, not because of any certain talent.
