Trying to get info

Hey all, I am in search of any current fleeters that laterally transferred FROM aviation prior to completing the FRS syllabus. I am looking for information of the process that may incur in order to potentially get a waiver to apply for a transfer. I have done my due diligence with the documents and HR sites and spoken to the community manager and even have a Capt Sel. willing to back me to get into said community. I know it will be an uphill battle trying to get out of my current contract but I am trying to gather as much info as possible so I can be prepared. Thanks all.

Aviation is a voluntary community, so you can always essentially DOR. There's a redesignation board for people doing what you're doing, and while it's great to have someone from the community you're hoping to go into rooting for you, they don't influence the board, and you might not get the community you want. Just be prepared for that.

Some due diligence of my own here... why leave now during the FRS? Is this a performance issue, or that you think VAW NFO isn't a good fit for you? If it's the latter, I'd urge you to stick it out and wait until you're in a fleet squadron. The FRS can be miserable, and not representative of what real life is like on the operational side. It's a bad time to make career-altering decisions.

A few years ago, I came onto the forum asking about AMDO and joining as a civ. This was after my recruiter had put in my package and essentially closed off opportunities for me to potentially put my app into the ring. You actually gave some info in that thread too.
The short of it is that had I the opportunity to work for AMDO back then I would've put all of my effort into that. It is where I see myself long term and despite how much I enjoy the learning the ins and outs of the plane, I do not see myself longterm doing NFO duties. I also really dislike the opportunities for NFOs (mainly how you can't do anything off the golden path unless you're getting out essentially).

FRS-wise, I am doing very well academically and in the sims but after speaking to the OCM, she has advised that it would be in my best interest to transfer prior to the 4yr mark due to the PQS process taking 48 months (24m I-level tour and 24m O-level tour).

The length of the FRS puts me into a predicament and I do not think that if I complete the FRS and go to a fleet squadron I wouldn't be released from the community until 1yr out.
Based on all of this, it seems that the best time to make the career change would be before I am patched to another squadron.

I'm trying to get as much info as possible, as well as talking to some of my trusted senior JOs at the squadron

Fair enough... Just know that AMDOs also have a golden path that's arguably even more restrictive, so recommend having one of your mentors walk you through what a 1520 career path looks like.

Is AMDO really that restrictive that they wouldn't see you doing a Fleet JO tour as an NFO beneficial to your career and overall Fleet knowledge/ability to support the Fleet? As an EDO, we mandate that our officers serve as a URL designator before making the transition into the community. From my experience working with AEDOs and AMDOs, doing a Fleet tour as an NFO or Aviator wouldn't seem to harm your ability to progress once you hop over to the RL community.

Very very unlikely the NFO community will waive your MSR to lateral transfer to another community.

If you DOR, while I’m not saying impossible, you’re going to have a very uphill battle convincing another community to give you a second chance because you didn’t like being in your first community.

Agree with the other aviators. Also, Willy Wonka says it best…

It's about career timing within a YG more than experience, per se. Someone in that situation would essentially be behind peers and less competitive for stat and admin boards.

I hear you and appreciate the response. I don’t dislike the community, in fact I love it and everyone in it that I’ve met has been fantastic. As Brett said below, it would put me at a disadvantage in relation to peers in my own YG. And I figure if I’m going to commit to the Navy for 20+ (which is my goal) I should do it in a community that I would choose over and over again. Being an NFO has been a great experience but if I could go back it wouldn’t be my first choice. Aviation maintenance was a field I was working towards before I joined the Navy and it has been something I have been in pursuit of ever since.

With all that being said, has anyone heard of someone doing this? Particularly while in the FRS as I agree it’s a very chance that I’m let go before my MSR
