Does anyone know if I, as an active duty member, will have to be on tricare even if I do not have any dependents? Do I have to pay for coverage?

I think you will be. In case of emergency you would give your tricare card to the caregiver if away from a military installation. Im not 100% sure though

Your military ID card is pretty much your tricare card in case of an emergency even though i got a Tricare card anyways.

This is what the card says that i got at the API brief over a year ago (which was totally confusing).
FOR EMERGENCY CARE: Go to the nearest ER equipped to handle your situation. Contact MMSO ASAP
FOR NON EMERGENCY CARE: Seek care at a military hospital if one is available within 40 miles or at a branch medical clinic if one is available within 20 miles. If they are not available you must contact Military Medical Support Office for authorization Prior to receiving civilian care.

It seems that to be seen by a civilian doctor they must take Tricare and you must get auth and probably have a tricare card (even though i cant find mine).
Whoops found it: says Valid with presentation of current military ID card.
No payment for coverage in my experience.
