The Perpetual MEGA Space Thread

I searched for a bit and could not find any threads dedicated to Space exploration. I feel like being an Aviation Nerd and a Space Nerd go hand in hand. Thus this thread was born. With CAPT Scott Kelly preparing for a year on ISS, Orion undergoing launch testing and Elon Musk pushing the envelope with SpaceX, it's a pretty good time to be alive.

This photo, tweeted out by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Jan. 29, 2015, shows personnel painting on the name of the company's first spaceport drone ship: "Just Read the Instructions."

I'm neither a space nor a Star Wars nerd, but this picture is pretty awesome!

47 years ago today (now yesterday due to website crashing). "Tranquility Base here, The Eagle has landed."

http://www.cnet.com/pictures/the-eagle-has-landed-11-amazing-facts-about-apollo-11/4/

Did not know the following:

Along with the American flag, the Apollo 11 mission left behind a small collection of items. Among them were medallions honouring Russian cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, and Vladimir Komarov, both of whom died tragically. Komarov's death is particularly shocking. The story goes that he knew he was probably going to die on the 1967 mission to put a man into Earth orbit. He didn't back out, because Gagarin was his back-up and he didn't want Gagarin to die.

The Earth Next Door
Astronomers find an exoplanet that could be habitable—and it’s as close to us as it could possibly be

On Wednesday astronomers made the kind of announcement that can only occur once in human history: the discovery of the nearest potentially habitable world beyond our solar system. This world may be rocky like ours and whirls in a temperate orbit around the Sun’s closest stellar neighbor, the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri just over four light-years away.

The newfound world, christened “Proxima b” by scientists, resides in an 11.2-day orbit where water—and thus the kind of life we understand—could conceivably exist. And it is likely to be little more than one-third heavier than Earth, suggesting it offers a solid surface upon which seas and oceans could pool.

This artist's impression depicts the newfound planet Proxima b orbiting the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, which at just over four light-years away is our solar system's nearest neighboring star. Proxima Centauri's close companions, the Sunlike stars Alpha Centauri A and B, appear in the background. Weighing in slightly heavier than Earth, Proxima b is likely to be a rocky world and orbits in a temperate region where liquid water and life could exist.
