Hey A4s, just as a means of comparison, what could you get on the speedo in your A-6 coming into the break at NUW at MRT. My best is ~530 in a Prowler.

I think @ 500 KIAS is the fastest I ever entered the NUW break. Not too much radar controlled in those days ... :)

The biggest "dare" I ever took was in my last week @ NUW -- under the bridge @ 450-500 KIAS , people up above looking down -- waving, pop'ed up, couple of rolls -- and pulled back down to the H2O to keep the rudimentary radar from seeing up up north ... not the first guy, but a very exclusive club.

Which way you take it, to the East or West? I always wondered (figured) that folks had flown under the bridge back in the day. Of course, that would NEVER go down these days. Someone like Meat would call it in ;)

Good times,

Deception Pass is gorgeous, my favorite place in WA easily. Seeing an A-6 under that bridge would have been one hell of a sight.

Hey, consider the source - I have no doubts. That kind of stuff was more prevalent back in the day and there are all kinds of sea stories like that floating around the NUW O CLub.

Good times,

Brett

No, don't be confused, Grasshopper. And you don't have to believe me, either, as the good news is -- the price of admission to this thread is free !!! :)

"Back in the Day" we used to do many things that you might recoil in horror at today. Was it the "smart" or "right" thing to do? I will leave that for others to decide --- but given the same set of circumstances -- I would do it again in a heartbeat; but that's just me. I was bullet-proof in those days -- wasn't everyone ?? There are 5-6 guys who have done this "feat of daring-do-(do?) ... I'm just one of them and we're only talking jet-jocks. The older, bolder prop drivers going all the way back to 1942 @ Whidbey used to do much wilder things -- no radar coverage.

Reality check for you: mine were the days that we would pack 150-200 people into the O'Club on any given Friday or Saturday night. Add a band, dancing, lots of "alcohol bonding", a $3000 Klondike game, and we were off to the races. It was part of our life style, we liked it, and you guys will never get to experience it ... sometimes I think that's too bad. If you think we were jerks, or "retarded", then consider yourself lucky to be here and now instead of there and then ....

We even used to have guys get grounded for "stunts"; both at the field and the ship ... myself included. But then, the higher-ups used to "unofficially" encourage aggressiveness, "the spirit of attack", and retro-TAILHOOK behavior. Now you have PC to the max, gender-neutralizing, downward death-spiraling "standards", career-path choking so-called "intrusive leadership", "don't ask--don't tell" EVERYTHING (!!), and, or course, PGM stand-off weapons. All-in-all, IMHO, you can put all of that stuff in a sh!t-can --- except for the PGM's, of course --- wish we had some of those ... :)

Basic requirement "then": You just need a single-seat A/C (loose lips sink ships) , or a B/N (BM?) or RIO with a spirit of adventure --- I had some of each. One man's opinion: the "Death by Stupidity" guys painted themselves into a corner, were overmatched and out of ideas. As always, you really, really, really DO have to know your own limitations.

And I always have ... do you ??? :icon_wink

oh, to have been in the navy in the good ole days. we had a navy community meeting a few weeks back it was kicked off with, "back in the day, we would have done this with dancing girls." the only consolation i had is that we're still allowed to have beer.

Some of those things still happen; now they are career enders.

Wasn't all that long ago ---maybe 2-3 years---that a Tomcat was seen crossing under some power lines in Nevada.

A4sForever, do you remember guys who broke the barrier below sea level?

I've come very close over the Salton Sea. About 200 feet below sea level. Very deceptive flying over glassy water with a skitzy radalt at MRT. Can get about 500 kts out of a Turkey and easily break the number in min burner in any variant given a short run.

As for what's below...it is the best signature I've seen yet...holding my sides laughing cuz I've been there, too.

Did I mention wipe out an endangered species. :) yeah my paps has some tailhook stories he wouldnt dare tell the females of the house hold........ not illegal or immorral (on his part anyway!)
