I was reading recently the new edition of the popular mechanics and it was talking about the new HUD system that is being introduced into the Marine Corp and the Airforce. It is supposed to be better in the sense that it is in the visor of the helmet. So this gives the back seatter the same perspective as the pilot. It works like the regular HUD except for the fact that it is in the visor. It has night vision capabilities as well. You get all the information you get in your regular HUD on this new peice of gear.

Does anybody know if they have started tesing it in the fleet. What do you pilots out there think about this. Is it going to making flying better?

the only thing I can think of is it makes the helmet heavier. heavy noggin = mucho weight when pulling g's

The Israeli's have had this for several years, they seem to get stuff to their operational guys a lot faster (their Python IV has been operational for years, and it is one bad a@# missile). They also apparently fit each of their Tacair guys with 2 custom helmets, one for night and one for day, so they can add a little extra weight to their helmets. With lightweight technology it should not be too hard anways. It is a lot easier to outfit a couple hundred guys with gucci stuff than it is a couple thousand, a big advantage. And they really don't pay anywhere near full price for their fighters anyways so they can spend it on other stuff.

I think you are talking about that helmet mounted system... VetteMuscle was talking about it in another post. Apparently it is already tested in the F-15s.

different system, that involved IR tracking for the AIM-9X but did not involve nightvision at all

So they will have 2 different systems? Or was the helmet mounted system just a small part of the overall helmet design?

The Israeli system puts the HUD image on the helmet visor, just as was described in the original post. It also acts as a helmet mounted sight for the Python IV. The helmeted mounted sights you are thinking of only provide targeting for their respective missiles (AIM-9X and AA-11), they do not act as a HUD.

the Joint HMCS does a lot more than just cue the Aim-9X, and it includes HUD
