Well, that's not a whole lo more than three latest update EP-3's would cost to acquire...and you can be damn sure it's cheaper and easier for the blimp to maintain 72 hours of continuous coverage. Just to give you an idea, with three EP-3s, operating as we do currently, you'd be lucky to get 50% coverage over a similar period...on a good day...if nothing broke...
Don't know programmatic specifics, but this could be a huge tool.
The problem with blimps is they're a platform in search of a mission. There's nothing they can do that's not already being done by other platforms. They might be able to do some things better, but with some significant drawbacks.
About every 20 years or so the Navy gets interested in blimps again; this time we actually got one flying with NAVY painted on the side before the low-interest light came on. We don't really have the budget these days for cool new toys. I find it interesting that the Army is the one pumping money into all the LTA programs now (they're paying for the MZ-3; VXS-1 was in the process of mothballing it).
Still...this beast is pretty damn cool-looking, and when's the last time anyone said that about a blimp?
