The chief of staff had always heard about the Admiral's hunting trips on the new property he had bought. And he was really anxious to get invited on one of these hunting trips. So he had put a bug in the Admiral's ear and eagerly awaited the Admiral's invitation.
One day the Admiral came up to him and invited him to his ranch that following Saturday. The chief of staff readily agreed and was very excited that he was finally invited.
So he drove out to the Admiral's ranch and they loaded up a pickup with gear and got ready to head out. The Admiral got into the driver's seat and started the engine...then he snapped his fingers and said, "Wait! I forgot my dog Chief! I can't hunt without that dog. He's the best damn hunting dog you've ever seen. He does it all!" So the Admiral went back, called for Chief, and the dog ran up and jumped into the back of the truck. And they headed out to the woods.
They hunted all afternoon, and they got quite a few birds that day. And each time, that well-trained dog Chief would point, pounce and bring back those birds remarkably without a single scratch.
The chief of staff shook his head and exclaimed, "Sir, that is the best hunting dog I've ever seen in my life! And I've been hunting since I was a little guy."
The Admiral replied, "You'll never see a better dog than Chief. He could hunt this game without us if he wanted."
The Admiral and the chief of staff had a great day of hunting.
The next year, the chief of staff was eagerly awaiting the Admiral's famous hunting invitation. And finally the Admiral asked him again if he wanted to go hunting on that property the Admiral had. The chief of staff readily agreed, and met him the following Saturday morning just like the year before.
The Admiral and the chief of staff loaded up the pickup truck with their gear and the Admiral jumped in and started to pull away. The chief of staff said, "Wait Sir! What about Chief? We can't forget him! That was the best hunting dog I've ever seen!"
The Admiral frowned and shook his head and said, "It's a sad sad thing with my dog Chief. A few weeks ago, I brought an Air force General out to hunt with me, and he made the mistake of calling my dog 'Master Chief', and now all that dog will do is sit by the fire and lick his own balls."
