Tailhook '91

I was at Hook the year before the blow up. It was ugly in the third floor hallway outside the admins at night. We would not open our door to the hallway or let females exit to the hallway...too dangerous.

The halls were so jammed back that you couldn't get anywhere and I stopped venturing into them years prior after getting a plastic beer cup jammed into my back by a reveler. It was far easier navigating out on the lanai part of the pool deck and hit admins when you needed a refill. What most people (especially those who never went) don't realize is Tailhook itself is a very professional event with industry and govt displays (you could and still can talk to your detailer) and presentations far from the admins that were not an official part of Tailhook itself, but a tradition of various units. That aspect was like a college Fraternity Row with all sorts of hi-jinks going on and "professionals" passing through the corridors who willingly sort attention of up close and personal kind. Coughlin was warned not to pass through the so-called "Gauntlet" area where tradition was to "zap" the females with squadron stickers (zappers). She thought she could take care of herself. Not to say the folks in hallway had an excuse, but the recipe for disaster was set at that point. Investigators then rolled in trying to solicite complaints from other attendees. If you read the report, you can see instances where investigators claimed abuse occured and in notes it clearly states that alleged victim does not agree with assessment. I met one of them and she was adamant that nothing happened that wouldn't have in a crowded bar and that she'd attend again.

^ Some guys were idiots and were over the top (as always) ... it was not a capital crime nor a lynching offense, however ...

But LT "X" ??? She was a P.O.S. before, during, and especially after the sad saga of Tailhook '91 .... I trust she's miserable and rotting somewhere now, a complete outcast, with or without her "settlement" blood $$$ ....

Ironically, that Tailhook was quite tame compared to some in the '80's when John Lehman was in office.

Yep, she made out like a bandit...$5M

Interesting cast of players in your link:

LT "X" -- a P.O.S. and a rat as previously mentioned ...

ADM Jeremy Boorda -- a Clinton administration military centerfold -- shot himself to death ...

Rep. Patricia Schroeder -- a shrill, ugly, angry, agenda driven woman if there ever was one ...

Sen. Patty Murray -- ditto -- and an embarrassment to the state of Washington -- I once had the "opportunity" to observe her up close and personal when escorting her @ NAS Whidbey during a photo op for her ...

Actually I believe there were one or two knuckleheads who crossed the line between "Fraternity Pranks" and real, no-kidding Sexual Assault. However, true to form, the "Leadership" at the time and the NIS morons gave those few immunity so they could get the story from them and hammer those who didn't do nearly as much. (Ripper Stumpf was probably one of the greatest Tailhook victims.)

Recommendation to mods: If we keep discussing Tailhook, perhaps a separate thread...

I have a USNA classmate whose promotion to O-7 was held up for over four years because of Tailhook. He finally pinned it on a few months ago.

** Yeah, but ** yeah, but ** yeah, but *** ..... even most murderers and bank robbers get a chance at rehab after retribution is paid.

These guys didn't and many (most?) of the Officers taken down were screwed, blued, and tattooed by the witch hunts and kangaroo courts that emanated from Tailhook '91 .... again, I discount the worst of the bunch (and that's not very many) who SHOULD have sacrificed SOMETHING -- even their careers for conduct unbecoming ....

We're still feeling the impacts of Tailhook '91 today -- 16 years later, for God's sake. That's proof positive that the "persecutors" (sic) have not rested in this case. It's become a bogeyman like Watergate is .... and that's just not right.

You are right A4s. It is amazing how one person in particular took one sign so personally that she seemed to make it her life's mission to kill us all.

Concur. That was my point - there was some bad sheite that happened, but those guys were let go, while those whose crime was being there were hammered.

Kelso sucked as CNO. He rolled over on us several times over, and it was either him or Boorda who sold Stan Arthur (an Aviation legend) in the same vein of political correctness.

Admiral Reason, who ran all of the Admiral's Masts was about as effective as Judge Ito was in the OJ trial. Basically, my whole generation didn't trust anyone with stars upon thars because they were all yes men and hacks.

I was still in HS at the time (but in the DEP for the Marine Corps) when Tailhook went down. I seem to remember that one of the Marine pilots "implicated" during the witch hunt wasn't even there...

Absolutely ... Stan was indeed "Stan the Man" .... but the rest of that "leadership" in the front offices of the Navy was one big reason I closed it out on 20 years rather than stick around for the O-6 and above parking spot .... just like I and many others bailed from active duty when Jimmy Carter's Navy was extant (but in reality, just barely alive).
