squeeze... how big of a leap was it? I've got time in a few fast movers, but all 2 person crew, with an FMS, autopilot, etc. Kinda wondering what I've gotten myself into.

It's not that bad Pat, but the first couple times you try flying the IFT, you'll feel like an idiot. I got out of there and thought to myself "I was able to fly an airplane before, right?" Being light on the controls in a 34 and being light on the controls in a 45 are vastly different things. This thing is a touchy *****. I'm no expert - I'm only at BI-02 as of today (so the whole transition is still fresh in my mind)- but I've done lots of practice sims, back seat rides, and got to fly the jet once. It's a whole 'nother world. I highly recommend hopping in the IFT every chance you get to build a scan and get the feel of the aircraft (mainly so you don't chase the VSI). Chasing the VSI was the hardest thing to overcome, especially with the spool up time of the engine.

It was also interesting to see how I'd totally forgotten how to talk on the radios when I was wholly consumed with trying to fly. It kinda makes you appreciate doing fams first in the 34. Maybe it's a bit easier with all that gucci **** in the Charlie though :)

Yeah, get as many free IFTs as you can... not sure how it works up in M-town, but down here you have to wait around, but usually you can get one a day. In the beginning when you aren't doing much other than academics, if you can get in it every day, it will help a lot in the end. I was able to get about 30 hours in it before I really started rolling, and it made a big difference in the early sims.
And def watch the PIOs, they can get rediculous in the sim, and in the plane if you aren't careful. On my instrument hops I fly the jet with 3 fingers usually, that's all you need... very very light touch. Like squeeze was saying, VSI control is huge, that def needs to be in the scan a lot.

It sounds like you’re about a flight or so ahead of me. That was a good description of the transition. You feel like an idiot, and the instructor is there to remind you of that. You can’t talk on the radios anymore because you’re so busy on baw that you just busted the 10 dme arc by a couple miles…. I did well, in primary RI’s, but this is a new ball of wax.

The only big difference with the Gucci crap in the village of meridian is the scan pattern. It’s weird going from steam gauges to the digital readout. So far, it messes me up – in the 34, you could catch the relative movement of the altimeter, where that isn’t the case here.

Getting sims is about the same here – you got to be on the SDO as soon as the schedule comes out. We can trunk flights here, although I don’t think that is allowed until forms? At least they wouldn’t let my buddy get up there in the BI/RI phase.

Well guys, if you are a FO, this topic is mute. All Fo's will get T-6's. Two classes behind me are the last ones to get T-34's. I don't know about pilots but it won't be an option for a FO. I personally think the T-34 is fine. Especially if you don't have any flight time. The fact of the matter is, you are going to be so busy learning your particular aircraft, that you will not have time to think about whatifs.
