I know that everyone thinks what they've flown is better than the other, but what I want to know is, Has anyone flown both? How do they compare? I know the T-6 doesn't have Beta, and that the T-34C is old, but how do they fly, which do you like better?

I flew the T-34, and would fly the T-6 if I had the chance. Listening to the thing fly overhead should answer that question.
Jumping from a Cessna to a T-34 was like going from the Minivan to NASCAR and then moving into the T-45, you feel like you only learned to fly a tricycle.
If you get the chance for the bigger meaner machine, why not take it? Unless of course you have to go to the AF for training.

Neo-
Only had 1 flight in the 34 back in the day (I have 105 hours in the 6), so I can't really compare the two fairly. But like BigWorm said, listening to it fly overhead should def answer the question. The T-6 sounds much cooler... besides, how can you argue with a digital cockpit, a moving map GPS, twice the power as the T-34, almost the same G limits as the T-45, and the best part... having that little yellow and black handle that will get you out in less than half a second if things get bad.

I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you!

Ejection seats worked fine the first time and they worked fine the second time. I can tell you that it was not the seats!

Actually they did, or tried to at least. Not sure if the class A is out yet, I've been trying to get access to it. Even if I did though, it'll be up to ya'll go to talk to your safety officer to get access to it. Not stuff that needs to be put up on a public forum.
Vic- What'd you select?? Tomorrow right??

Other nice thing- OBOGS. Get to fly up into the jet structure, so you can go a hell of a lot further on cross countries.

TAD... glass cockpit... ejection seats... lot more power... CFS... birdstrike resistant...

Other things? Don't practice landing in farmer's fields... something about no fuel bladders or something. No TACAN in the T-6 (I don't get that one at all... but you can shoot an ILS). No beta already mentioned. Supposedly wider turning radius on the ground-- I wouldn't know, but the IPs always mention it.

Yeah good call on the OBOGS... max cieling is like 31k I think. It doesn't need a TACAN, it has VOR/DME, which works fine if you have a VORTAC, which is what a lot of the facilities have anyways. Plus, it has an RNAV appch certified GPS... what else do you need? Differential braking, you can turn that sucker on a dime... and we've already gone into the stopping distance / beta debate, so I'll just leave that one.

Yeah, NATOPS max ceiling is 31K although Raytheon still says it can go higher.

You're right that not having a TACAN isn't a big deal, except around military airfields like Whiting or Sherman, where there's no VOR. You can still use paired frequencies to get DME off it, and usually the IP will give us the GPS needle anyways...

In a way it's a blessing, cause we always get radar vectors on departure, while the T-34 bubbas always hafta fly to MENTR9 departure out of Sherman... I don't know if you've seen it, but that sucker's a pain in the ass...

Selected helos! I'm at Whiting now and loving it! Maybe that means I can come back and instruct in the T-6 when it's finally over here around 2007.

When's the T-6 phasing into the Navy flight pipeline at Whiting and CC?
Considering the Navy isn't buying anymore T-6s for a couple years...

I was at the NAS Atlanta Air Show and they had a T-6 demo, with the Texan and the older model. They introdused it as the new trainer for the Air Force and the Navy.

I was talking to an EA-6B pilot and he said the T-6 has, way too much power for first time students. Is that good or bad? well that depends.

It's supposed to bridge the gap between the T-34 and T-45 and ease the transition a bit. Without the T-2 around anymore, the T-45 is a lot of airplane coming from the T-34 (but can be done fine w/ enough practice).
