What types of places do SNAs do their cross country flights to? Do you have a choice or a maximum distance you can fly? Also, just out of curiosity, what altitudes and speeds are typical in this aircraft on cross countries? Thank you.

VEGAS BABY!!!!!! And just depends on the instructor for alts and a/s. Some stay low, others like to get up high. A/S ~170-190

The distance depends on the instructor. Typical cross countries consist of 3 legs there and 3 legs back, with each leg being around 400 miles. You fly at max blast which nets around 190 kts depending on altitude. I did one leg of mine at 19k feet to take advantage of the jetstream and get some Class A time. The rest were dont at around 5-9k. Your butt gets real numb sitting for that long in those seats...but theres some tricks with the parachute straps to help.

Thanks guys- sounds awesome!

It sounds like a lot of fun. I guess anything beats those cross countries in a C172.

Vegas baby! It's a full day's work to get there but very much worth it IMHO. Split a room at Luxor and you end up only paying out like $40 a night of your own cash duing the summer, and during winter it'll cost you nothing of your own.

go somewhere short. the less the work the better. if you want to go to vegas...go southwest. those hung over flights home suck.

I went to Cape Girardeau MO about 2 hour drive south of St. Louis. We were going to head to Corpus, but weather looked like crap. So I decided to go to my dad's. The IP that I asked to go was a fellow Coastie and C-130 driver.. had never been to the mid-west.

First leg we went up to about 12K.. after first stop, we had enough of that. Drooling in the O2 max is not my idea of fun.. that, and noone can understand you.

Each of our legs was about an hour or so.. followed by the an average of 3 approaches before landing, refueling and moving on.

3x's a day is max. I did 3 RI's on the way up.. Whiting to Birmingham.. Birgmingham to Greenville MS (not much there, but had several nice approaches).. then landed in Cape Girardeau at the completion of day 1 of their local Air Show. :)

2nd day was the 2 Day VNavs (1500' up the Mississippi, cruised around St. Louis at 1500 ft, landed at Downtown Airport, up again, flyby of the Arch, back to Cape).

Then Sunday, 1 RI on the way back, the I4390 and then a night VNav to home field followed by a few PARs.

It was nice having short legs.. I mean, you can only learn so much navigating air ways and then you're just wasting time IMHO... not to mention, killing your ass bone. Most of our routes were 8000 or 9000 ft to keep cool, but also to stay off the O2 mask.. bleck.

And yeah, 1015 on the power setting ~ 190 KIAS the whole way.

Denver!! Is there a better place to go?! I think not. Leaving from Whiting it'll take 3 legs to get there and then were taking a day off and going to the ball game! Then of course to Lodo to work on the old BAC

Can someone explain to me, why people think Denver is such a great town. I lived there for 5 yrs, and IMO it does not hold a candle to most coastal cities as far as the nightlife, weather, people go. You will never really here me talk pensacola up, but I enjoy it here a lot more than there.

Do NFOs go on Cross Countries during API?

Do NFOs go on any cross countries? If not what else do SNAs do during API that NFOs don't?

primary - went to Ft. Lauderdale - yeah baby!
intermediate - went to Alamogordo, MN (Holloman AFB) - SUCKED, but my IP was my onwing and hella cool.
advanced (T-44) - went to Pax River, MD - not bad, beautiful area, awesome IP.
FRS - went to Amsterdam (actually Leiden) - too damn cool for words, P-3s ROCK!

no matter where you go, if your IP is cool, it is a good time. don't do anything too complicated. One good reason to go to Vegas (where i tried to go twice) is that you can do your VNavs in the Grand Canyon. Do your Tac Forms and Vnavs on the road if you can, RI flights the whole way can begin to suck after the first two legs.

such a good time! Just make sure you're with a cool IP!
