All the Marines in 28 wear the subdued, but Navy can wear it if they want. I've been wearing one for a week just for the hell of it, caught sh!t from one Marine, but most don't care. I guess the Marines in 27 can't wear the subdued til they solo.

After digging out my TRAWING-4 preflight guide (with the snazzy "prison orange" cover typical of 27 no less), there is no mention at all of the mysterious wooden block. I'd look in NATOPS, but it's out in my car. And I'm not THAT interested in this...
Hey man that prison orange is better than the pink ones people have been getting lately. I asked my roommate, who's in 27, this morning about the block and he remembered looking at it but nothing specific about it.

Upon further review, I couldn't find the wording (NATOPS, SOP, or otherwise) that requires us to check it. ...So I mentioned it to my onwing over the phone while we were talking about the cross-country plan for next weekend. His response? It went a little something like this: "Uh... I think that's in the... Um... Oh hell, I can't remember."

Nope, I'm at Corpus. And the answer I was told was hardpoints. These are on the bottom of the wing somewhere, but not right against the fuselage. One of the South American countries flies a combat version of the T-34 I think, hence the hardpoint answer.
About the cowling lockpins, the only thing I was told to check for is that the little pin inside the horizontal slot is flush with the outer edge of the pin. If thats confusing, sorry, don't know how to explain it any better.

The cowling lockpins are on the front portion of the cowling, two on either side of the airplane. Look for a small hole forward and just aft of each exhaust stack. You'll see what looks like the head of a flathead screw, but it will have a small circular pin in the center of the groove. That pin must be flush with the outer part of the screw, and the groove must be horizontal.
Well I still haven't had any luck finding where it says to check the block. I flipped through and nice tall stack of hazreps yesterday trying to find something in there. Asked the mechs today they just said that all they do is check everything for security which seems kind of a BS answer. So who knows my on wing hasn't downed me yet for it, I prey he will take mercy on me.
