I want to know if there is possibles SWO candidates considering the METOC program. I already took the ASTB and I was thinking in that option due to my BS in chemistry. I wanna know how is this community since I don't find any site regarding this.

SWO (METOC) option officers serve as a SWO for their first four years of service, essentially to MSR. At the 4 year mark, you will redesignate to METOC and head to Monterey (Naval Postgraduate School) to take the METOC program there. From then on, you are a METOC officer.

Other SWO options paths include Information Professional, Engineering Duty, Information Warfare (crippie) and Intelligence. The other communities really like the SWO option program since they can count on those Officers for their community health. From the SWO perspective, it's not an issue. The Officer is just like any other SWO until the 4 year point.

I should be up for the Nov. boards and am looking forward to being a Naval Officer no matter what i get picked up for. SWO is in my top 3, and i was wondering what you think about SWO ED. From the research i have done on Google it sounds fairly competitive, rewarding, and fun (plus i would get to use my mech. eng. degree). You can PM me if you like, sorry for the thread jack OP.

So it would be better sign up just for SWO only that is 4 year contract than SWO METOC option because my recruiter said that METOC is a 7 year contract due to the master degree involve. It's that true?

Haaa and thanks a lot for your answer...

SWO/METOC, like all other SWO/XXXXX programs, gives you the option to stay SWO (1110) after your initial sea tours. There's really no downside for you at this point. Keep in mind that the 'typical' SWO career path will send you to get a masters after those tours anyway- so you're still looking at serving extra time to pay them back (prob ~8 yrs total). Of course if you don't want to get a masters they won't force you.

Rass, I've had ED explained to me a few times and I always zone out before I get it. I'm not an engineer- if you're into that stuff you should get in touch with some EDs.

Well, there could be some hidden issues here depending on OCS vs NROTC vs USNA. You mention "recruiter" so I'm thinking you are OCS. You don't commit to 7 years for SWO METOC options. You commit to SWO with an MSR, at MSR you opt to exectute METOC. The first stop on your METOC path is the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, for a 24-27 month curriculum. At the conclusion of this program, you incur a 3 year payback. In the end, it could be a seven year overall commitment.

I'm not sure what your MSR is set to from OCS.

Maybe different facets of same program, but we've got a SWO IP and SWO IW option, and both were told they're going to their gaining communities following the first tour.
And a ASAT classmate just left his ship to go to METOC school.

I am a Metoc hopeful as well. Metoc boards meet once a year and mine is meeting around Dec 15. It's a pretty tough field to go straight into, so I am told. Last year they chose 2 out of 24 applicants. SWO-metoc meets most every month.

SWO Bubba.. are you in the metoc field? would love all the details from someone who is there. My recruiter told me that i would be a swo-metoc for 18 months and then redesignate to the metoc field. training is in Gulfport, Miss. I like the idea of going to Monteray much better. From what I have heard, you can get your Masters, and if you're one of the few chosen, your Phd there as well.

Not in the METOC field - straight SWO. I'm a little confused myself on timing for METOC options. I've seen some option officers move on to their option paths after the 4-year mark and some after their first divo tour at around 24 months.

I was there for 13 months on the enlisted side for METOC. The base is a complete hole. The whole area is for that matter. They just never rebuilt anything after katrina. Except for the casinos! I will say those are the only semi-decent things around biloxi. And most likely the only thing keeping the city alive besides the base. Some good fishing too i guess, but the base is horrible. crappy chow halls, small commissary and PX. they have 3 gyms, but they are all VERY small. have to go at weird hours if you want to get anything done. Beach is filled with used diapers and syringes. lot of meth heads all around base. no good looking woman off base. (quite a few on base though). The wal-mart off the main road is the local hangout in town if that says anything. I guess the bottom line is dont expect to have fun there unless you enjoy drinking heavily.

Check out a place called Merigs near the mall (dont worry there is only one mall so you should be able to find it). Great food and beer, plus they started doing beer pong competitions on fri and sat nights before i left. oh and i almost forgot... they have a BBQ place called The Shed. Now, im from california so this might not be saying much, but BEST BBQ i have ever had in my entire life. Ask anyone on base and they will know where its at. DEF recommend!!!
Thats all i can think of. Hope it helps.

Is your officer METOC course the same as the AF's? I think theirs is a 2 month deal or so.
