somewhat different for Helo guys as we are usually fairly close to friendlies though not always. The guys that got captured in Blakchawk down ran out of ammo plain and simple. CSAR is so good now that you really wont be spending much time on the deck, either rescued or captured very soon.

Not trying to pry OPSEC here, so just say the word, but would the above be valuable (assuming it's not part of a weapon already)? I could see it going both ways. Great way to designate/ID w/out the bad guys seeing (for the most part), but also could be interpreted the wrong way by friendlies. Then again, so could a flare.
Just curious on your thoughts, as much as you care to share.

a hand held PEQ is probably better -- more powerful....skid has it down -- max out water and ammo, but make sure you can grab it quickly and it is secured in the cabin/cockpit. In a recent mishap, we had stuff shot all around the cockpit and found a sidearm underneath a seatwell after it came out of a holster....

Being in the LAMPS MK I community , most of our "fleet" flying was blue water, not much need for land survival stuff. But since you never know, I packed the extra stuff anyways.

I kept essentials in my CMU-33 (AIRSAVE Vest). I carried extra water, a better knife, and a med kit.
M11 and 3 Mags on the vest.
Helmet bag had some land survival stuff, really just stuff to make a night in the Seahawk Hotel more comfortable than anything else. (we were not really flyin anywhere near contested territory, and the M-60 or GAU-16 made the immediate area of the helo a pretty defensible position if we had to set down somewhere)
Bag goodies-
Watch cap
Space Blanket
fire starting goodies (Mag/Flint combo, lint)
Gatorade/Diet Coke

Another take away from Mogadishu, no electicity no GAU. If you go down and have any damage on the bird no GAU.

GAU-16 is mechanically operated 50BMG
No electricity needed.
EDIT- I should have been more specific as to WHAT GAU in my previous post, as the -17 needs electricity. Not sure what other flavors are out there on helos/ospreys
