Surprising DLA

My XO at my ROTC Unit did some good looking out and helped me inquire about recieving DLA. After a going up the chain for a while at PSD it was deemed that I was entitled to DLA comming out of ROTC to my first PCS here in PCOLA. Because I was at my ROTC for 6 months before reporting to A-Pool, the ROTC became my first duty station and I recieved DLA. I know I am not the only one in that boat, but you have to be proactive in getting it and dont take no from the first couple of guys at PSD. After getting down here, Pensacola PSD tried to take it back from me, so I had to repeat the above process, but in the end I got it.

That's all well and good if you're on commissioning orders, but there are ways to get DLA from your initial point of commissioning. I did it, but I was PCSed to my initial point before I transfered. Sounds like the OP's XO found a loop-hole that does a similar thing just due to timing.

If the original poster's story is true, great, but it is either a new(er) rule or something that no one knows about.

I think what happened here is he got commissioned and then remained at the ROTC for 6 months. The ROTC unit then became his first duty station. Then when he moved he received DLA.

Thats just fvckin great. I wish my unit could have stashed me for 6 months instead have letting me rot in Pen"suck"cola for 9 months. At least I could have been $1200 richer. Well...at least i got to see wet t-shirt night at Flounders. That had to be worth at least a couple bucks.

Going down to be a aviator, huh? Well - DFAS still has 8+ years to get the DLA back from you if they want it ;)

Gents-

Here's an even better one (courtesy of my P-3 NFO Class Advisor in ROTC).

Commissioned in LA, TAD to VF-126 Bandits in San Diego for 179 days (key point), PCS to Pensacola. Show up to Pensacola and get a message to come "pick up my check".....you guessed it, per diem check for time spent in San Diego flying two hops a day in the backseat of the TA-4. Check total: $8942!

Didn't spend it for a year thinking "they'd" come take it back....until I went back the ROTC unit the following year and my advisor asked me what I did with the check (he explained to me the legality of it all and assured me "they" would NOT be coming back to get it!).

Gotta love being an ensign with that kinda cash!

I used that argument to get DLA when I arrived at primary, and even though many people who were in the same situation before me got it I was told the interpretation of the rules changed, and I was SOL.
