Surefire 2008 Models Out!

Well Surefire has finally released there 2008 flashlight models - you can download the 2008 catalogs here -

But clearly the MacDaddy of Surefire products is the new UA2 Optimus - 200 Lumens of tactical flashlight goodness - in a computer controlled variable output, variable beam design - complete with SOS strobe.

Surefire engineering at it's best from what I've read of the early reviews - I can't imagine a better tool for in or out of the cockpit. Make sure your wives/girlfriends know where to get one for you

Looks pretty badass. I was looking at an enlarged image detailing the functions of this flashlight and at the highest setting it had a 400 lumen output instead of the advertised 200 lumens.

There are two models - the Optimus has variable beam (flood/spot) and goes to 200 Lumens - there is another very similar model - only without the varable beam lens that indeed goes to the incredible 400 lumens - both are new and in the 2008 catalog

I love Surefire and personally have the A2. However, I was very upset with them when I found out they don't sell the LED assembly as a stand-alone product. I already have the green LED assembly but wanted red. It would be a simple, twist off-twist on replacement for whichever color I wanted. There answer was "you can purchase another A2 if you want red".

Now I'm just a disgruntled individual with only a green A2 and no intent to ever buy another A2 just for the purpose of having red.

Out of curiosity, why do you want red? Your profile says you're in API, so if you're thinking about it for use in flight school, just keep the green. You shouldn't be pre-flighting w/ red and green works just as well as red in the cockpit (I'd argue it works better). When you get to the fleet, green will be the defacto color, provided it's NVG compatible (green does not guarantee that it's NVG compatible, but I'd guess it is coming from Surefire). If you're looking to use it on the civil side until flight school, I'd recommend staying w/ the green, since that's what you'll use in the future. My $.02. Your use may be for something totally different.

I appreciate the advice. I had heard green was what people like on the MIL side of flying (I'll be starting Primary next week), but when flying with my civilian instructor he had always suggested red (however, I continued to use green). The desire to have a red light was simply to end the griping of my instructor. I'm glad to hear that the green will do me just fine in during training and in the fleet. Thanks!
