Wow...good find, I never thought I would see that thing again!!! My Pops works for Lockheed Martin (skunk works) out in Palmdale, and I got a walk through of their facilities over there and we walked into the ADP (advanced development projects) hangar and saw that thing!! When I was talking to them about it, they said it was only like a 12th of the size of the "Real" one. Supposed to be able to carry a whole battalion and all their gear or something unbelievable like that. Still weird looking, but interesting to see it flying!

What percent get...blimps?

Has anyone ever heard of the WIG (wing in ground effect) That seemed like a reasonably good idea for transports across open areas.

Another thing that some desk jockey thinks up that can only see problems in the future.

I can see it now, an entire battalion lost because of ONE enemy missile. That's calling for much worse outcries than those over a squad lost because of one AAV hit by an IED.

that's the kind of thing people mistook for flying saucers in the 1950s...dumb, slow flying saucers

The Russians tried that with their ekronoplan.

So you mean the one in the video is a 12th the size of the real one? Or it is the real one, and the one you saw was a 12th of its size? :icon_conf

No that was the one I saw, and they were working on just getting it to fly, the one they want to build will be like 12 times bigger! I thought they were kidding, but every single eye looking back was serious...so I held back my chuckle!! Only problem I saw was where do you put something like that, and as already stated its damn slow and one easy target!

It looks like a blimp made specifically for fat people.

A doubel wide dirigible with double wide seats.

Methinks that this wouldn't be a "first wave" vehicle. That place is reserved for helos and AAV's. This would be for follow on forces/support, much like the LCAC - only larger.

An AAV being hit by an IED illustrates that the Marine Corps is making due with what they have, for what is essentially the Army's core competency. AAV's are designed for amphibious assault, not occupation. Our job is to hit the beach, fight with amazing tenacity, take large amounts of casualties, and get a foothold for the Army to come in with their huge numbers & support.

As is always the case, the Marine Corps will do what it is asked to do... Hence the reason you can say "AAV hit by an IED". However, if we still focus on our core competency (amphibious assault), then yes, this vehicle could have it's place...

Think airSHIP, vice a combat aircraft. Something like this would likely be employed like maritime shipping, taking equipment across the ocean that would normally be carried by a ship, but a lot faster than one.
