Stashed at NAVAIR

Since I didn't know where else to post this, I'll post here. I will be comissioning in March of next year (partial 5th year). Assuming I select either 1395 or 1375 (1st and 2nd choices), I will obviously be looking at some stash time. I would like to work at NAVAIR for that period of time; is this feasible? If so, how would I go about getting my foot in the door, and making it work with my NROTC command? For clarification, I am a mechanical engineering major, so the technical degree part wouldn't be a problem. Would this be a waste of my time?

MIDNJAC-

Please don't go to NAVAIR!!! That would be a MAJOR mistake.

Number One "stash" location should be VFC-111 in Key West!! Not only are you living in the Conch Republic, but you will also be flying in the back seat of an F-5 as much as you probably want!

My time spent as a stash ensign at (back in the day) VF-126 in Miramar, was probably one of the best times in my Navy career.

Trust me on this one.....(and PM me if you want me to put you in touch with the CO/XO of -111).

Don't Do It

I currently work for a company supporting NAVAIR as their oversight with the supplier on certain portions of a contract. I don't think that you would enjoy it. Honestly, go find yourself a squadron somewhere. You wouldn't learn much about building aircraft, but you would learn about government contracting. It was a big letdown for me, but at least I have the pay to lessen the sting. You won't.

If you must go to Pax, try and get stashed at TPS, Station, somewhere there are fleet pilots that aren't doing acquisitions...

SNAs/SNFOs are commissioned as 1390/1370 - no more reserve commissions.

Thanks for all the responses, everyone. Just kinda weighing my options right now. For everyone who has done something like this, how did you work with your commissioning unit to get stashed elsewhere?

Jaysus...how bad is the career politc-ing that ensigns are worried about where they get stashed??

A-Pool...phone muster, drink beer. End of story.

Not as much career politic-ing as wanting to do something interesting with my stash time....I've had plenty of time in the last 6.5 yrs of college to drink beer and hang out :D

I hope you find getting coffee for the boss interesting, because you might just end up doing that at NAVAIR...

Concur. How many times have we said it before - You won't get another opportunity like this in the fleet. Enjoy it while you can.

Sounds like they got their hands on a copy of VP's Junior Officer Career Management Guide

"When to Begin Planning
Young Officers must start planning their careers early on in the training command. Although none of the fitness reports received throughout the training commands is observed, the level of commitment here is very important...."

Not trying to be facetious here, but doesn't your stash time end when A-pool starts? I fully plan on taking it easy there. I just don't want to hang around my NROTC unit any longer than I have to (like most of my classmates who just comissioned who will be there for 2+ months stashed)

Why don't you go find a squadron some place looking for a stash? Yea, it may mean living in a Q but ashore we had a lot of stash Ensign to help with the crappy little jobs. In return, they got physio quals and some flight time and went to NPA a bit more prepared.

why in God's name would you want to go there....Pax is great...but go to one of the VXs... you could end up on a Hawaii det for 3 weeks at the Waikiki Hilton ....like me, (paid for by Johns Hopkins):icon_smil

I deal with NAVAIR/PMA's all the time and that is the last place any stash SNA/SNFO should be allowed to go -- no, the Pentagon would be last, then NAVAIR. Go to a fleet squadron, see what it's really like and why you really want to get your wings.
I am a mechanical engineering major,
Wrong, you're going to be an SNA. Pull that engineering degree out after your first squadron tour when you're picking a major at NPGS.
