One of the worst squadron names and patches, the 'Cobras'.........yech......:confused:

Yeah, which A-hole decided on that? It's funny how within the space of about one year, they went from trying to create a whole new squadron, to killing that idea plus killing another exped unit - arguably because of FLE red striping.

I believe it is the first CO's perogative to decide the squadron insignia and patch design when a squadron stands up. The story that I heard from a 139 guy was that the first CO loved his car, a Cougar, and had graduated from UNC, hence the light blue. Viola!

I've heard the same thing. I've read/heard that the Yellowjackets were so named because their first skipper was a GT alum. The bee on their patch looks almost exactly like the old school logo (pre-Buzz).

A lot of ships (seems like mostly LHA/LHD) have callsigns that are based off of their COs alma maters.

I still chucke a little bit on the inside when I see someone with a VAQ-143 "Plank Owner" hat on. :D
