Squadron Decommissioning

Once a squadron is disbanded and stands down, can they be brought back later? Basically I'm wondering if jets in the future could possibly wear the colors of squadrons like the Sunday Punchers or the Wolfpack to name a few.

My old squadron VAQ-128 had the same colors and logo of the "Fighting Phoenix" which was the same as the the old Intruder RAG VA-128.

For your own edification, and the sake of clairity, the proper terminology (at least how it's talked about in the fleet) for such a thing is to decommission or "decom" a squadron. A stand-down is something completely different.

While that is how it is talked about, it isn't correct. Ships are commissioned and decommissioned, squadrons are established and disestablished.

IIRC, under the current rules once a squadron is disestablished it cannot be brought back. Even if a unit gets the same numerical designation it is considered a new unit, and the unit history starts anew. However, a unit can borrow from the past, and it will be described as "assuming the traditions, patch, etc of the (old unit)". So yes, there could be a VFA-75 "Sunday Punchers" flying the JSF some day, and it can borrow all the old Punchers stuff, but it is a new squadron.

I knew some MOTO would chime in on this, hence my parenthetical explanation. Several Prowler squadrons were brought back to life as exped. units and they are, for all intents and purposes, the same squadrons with the same histories, regardless of whatever "official" rules that might exist within NAVAIR.

The most recent example was from a couple of months ago - VFC-13 Det Key West was renamed VFC-111, a re-awakening of the Sundowners. I thought it was interesting that of all the old squadrons they could pick, they chose one that is a direct face shot to the Japanese. I'd hate to be explaining that one as I swapped sake with my JMSDF brethren at their O-club at Iwakuni. (The same function I had to walk to because the Marines stole my bike....)

strike stole, they borrowed or "acquired" it ;)

EDIT: The bastards stole it and will burn for all eternity in the fiery depths of hell for their crimes against humanity!

I believe they changed the rules after my unit was 're-established' in 1997 that now allows a squadron to be officially re-established. I will have to do some searching to find that out for sure.

It would be cool if 128 came back as the Growler RAG......:D

And if we could get our spaces back...I believe 142 has been squatting there for almost a year now. I would love to go back to hangar 5 for the Shocker RAG! :D

I'm pretty sure things got all switched around there and 129 is now over where 133/131 used to be. There isn't going to be a new RAG for the Shocker - 129 will do both platforms until the Prowlers go away.
