Springfield XD

All,
I'm thinking of spending a little coin on a handgun. I've been toying with the notion of the Springfield XD line, preferably in the .40 cal variant. I've shot the XD once in both the .45 and 9mm, and have shot other 40's and felt they struck the balance between a hand cannon and something to plink away with.

Any opinions on the weapon itself? I've shot 9mm and enjoyed it, but wanted something just a little heavier. Any of you guys with plenty of experience in this area, your expertise is greatly appreciated. Any recommendations for something similar in terms of capabilities and reliability, as well as price?

My intent right now is not to get the CC permit, but it might be something I take care of in the future. At least I'm not a maryland resident anymore, so the option is there finally.

Also, anyone have a recommendation of a range in CC where I can get decent instruction. I was a solid shot, and whenever the opportunity to shoot presents itself, i don't feel bad when i pull my target back 'cept when I'm around my USMC S/S buddy, but I've never had any formal instruction. Just what I got from Pops and the Grandfathers when I was a rugrat running around their farms shooting groundhogs for shits and giggles (and because my wise ass grandfather convinced me to sweat my ass off all summer shooting the little bastards for a dollar a pop) with a .22

The sharpshooter does 1 on 1 instruction as well as the CC classes. No experience as to their quality but they seem like a squared away bunch. Or email some of the folks on cbshooters.com, they can probably point you in the right direction.

I have an XD-40. About 4 years old. Shot it a lot. Had some problems with it in the past year. 3 trips to the factory for major work due to fatigue issues. I wouldn't trust my life to it anymore.

Yeah, in Corpus, I recommend the Sharp Shooter for classes. The do the CC classes and every flavor of shooting skills classes.

They also have a decent indoor range, and if you're going to buy from them, they'll let you test drive anything in the store. Just make sure to have all your paperwork squared away before you go in.

For just plinking, can't beat the price of Starry Range on Flour Bluff. Much cheaper than SS, but it's outdoor and only open weird hours. Classes there are on a weird schedule, too.

I have the XD 40 and 45. 40 more accurate with the double tap and faster shooting. I'd recommend both. 40 was handgun of the year 2003, 45 handgun of the year 2006.

I bought one based on the rec or a full time hand-gun coach who is in my family. He said the accuracy of it is amazing for the price. He actually has one XD he never cleans to make a point about it's shootability and accuracy (whatever he is shooting is about 100X more accurate than the same weapon in my hands) even when in nasty condition. I used to put a lot of rounds through mine (and DID clean it) and never had any issues.

He (the guy mentioned above) does the whole scope-on-a-pistol things sometimes for competitions, but likes his XDs for "fun" shooting.

You haven't lived until you have seen a man shoot a moving squirrel out of a tree with a simple pistol. In one shot. Like something out of the movies....but I digress.

I have the 45 compact. I've put about 800 rounds through it. Still somewhat new but no problems so far. The slide is so heavy on it though that it doesnt really recoil that much more than my glock 40 compact.

Honestly, I really don't notice the difference between 9mm and .40S&W---when it comes to shooting it, anyway. The .40 is slightly more "snappy". Ballistically, the .40S&W has superior ballistics. Higher velocity for a given projectile weight, blah blah. If you're using this for range work as well as personal defense, I'd say go .40S&W. If you're just looking for a range weapon, go 9mm---the ammo is cheaper.

I have a subcompact 9mm for summer carry and a full size .45ACP for winter carry. They're Glocks, but the XD is very similar. Great weapons, can't go wrong with either.
