Hey all,

I'm currently stationed at TBS and will be headed to Pensacola some time after Christmas. I'm looking for help on the topic of spouses in regards to working.

Specifically, is there a way to have a military spouse work through the DoD and thereby be able to transfer their careers when their signifigant others change duty stations?

Also, is there any program which makes graduate school for spouses easier on the couple?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, or direction to where help might be found.
 
Sorry to give you the bad news, but as far as I know, there's no such program. Look at it this way--even two married servicemembers are not guaranteed to move around together. The military will try and do the best they can, though, for that couple. I doubt they would consider doing anything for a DoD employee.

If your spouse wants to work, that's great. Mine has found something in insurance which is pretty easy to transfer around, although her bigger goal of being a financial agent is pretty shot because you can't build a client base when you're moving all the time. Lots of happy wives have found general careers, like teaching, nursing, banking... you get the idea. Lots of unhappy wives have found careers which don't mix well with moving around. It sucks, but it is what it is.

From my personal observations, the larger the importance of the spouse's career, the more problems in the marriage.

I am pretty sure fleet and family services has a program for hiring spouses...kind of a job refferral service. I don't know about transferrability, but FAFS is a good place to start.
 
What type of work does your spouse do? A lot of people have had good luck through Kelly Services (which is a temp agency, but it's a job). You may want to look into that.
 
Hey! My husband is a Marine SNA and we are currently in Pensacola. I will be graduating with a master's in psychology within the year (as soon as I finish my thesis!) Anyway, to answer some of your questions....there is no program where jobs are transferable but if your spouse worked for the government (or a large company with many offices around the country) then they could possibly transfer within the company whenever you PCS. Unfortunately, there just isn't a guarantee. Here is the website for some DOD jobs - http://www.usajobs.gov/ - spouses do get "preference" points for some jobs if you are going to be stationed at that specific location for more than six months.

As for grad school, I do not think there is a military program but many spouses go to grad school online. (I am not, I finished my coursework before we left for Quantico). What is your spouse studying? I am sure some programs are more suitable for online programs than others.

As for getting a job in general during the frequent moves in the beginning of Officer training and flight school, temp companies do help immensely.
