They developed it sometime in the '50's and all follow on S&W semi autos were basically variations of the Model 39. One of my HS classmates was UDT/later SEAL and he said "they" liked the caliber (?), function, reliability, and its adaptability to "silencing". I never owned one, but one of the guys I flew with had one --- he loved it also.

I have a model 59 that I inherited unfired. From day one I was told it wasn't anything special, that the Hi Power was better, yadda yadda yadda.....

But, having shot a few different SIG's, Kimber 1911's, Colt 1911's, Hi Power's a Springfield XD, etc., I have yet to find a pistol that I can shoot better than the model 59. I guess it all boils down to how it fits the individual shooter. When it comes to rapid fire, nothing else I've shot comes close.

I wouldn't keep an M&P if I got it for free. Read the reviews, handled a couple, talked to owners. S&W has stayed true to their roots in producing yet another POS automatic.

Also, wow, another run of the mill overpriced AR. Gee... no wonder your sh-tty company always winds up in financial trouble. I could build a clone of that AR for about 60% of the price with better parts.

Nope. Just not a fan of S&W at all (good revolvers). Plus, I get tired of seeing everyone and their brother jumping in the AR game with an overpriced rifle and no outstanding features to justify the price.

But have you tried many ??? I thought the third generation semi's by S&W were uniformly good, solid pistols.

Below is possibly the best functioning out-of-the-box .45 ACP I ever had .... zero gunsmithing .... won two competitions and trained many hours with it.

Zero malfunctions. I just didn't like the grip panels, the slide mounted safety, and it was a little too heavy for a compact, in my opinion. But then, so is a Colt Officer's Model ...

It was a great little pistol, but I like Colt's .... dance with the one that brought 'ya ... be true to your school, Rah, Rah, Rah, sis-boom-bah .... :)

Just FYI, The S&W M&P pistol in .40 was just purchased en masse by the Cincinnati PD. They went from an earler S&W auto in 9mm to the M&P. I shoot USPSA Practical Pistol with a couple of the department's officers - and so far the gun earned rave reviews according to these towo guys I shoot with. I was told that for a 4 inch daily carry/service pistol is is one of the most controllable in .40 - can't confirm that because I haven't shot this weapon yet. Apparently a lot of weight went to the pistol ergonomics - they have a lot of small statured women on the force and that was a consideration.

I think Smith and Wesson has turned the corner - the reviews of their AR's have been really solid - and they are well priced. I am in the market for a rifle ...

BINGO! You got it in one:D Everyone is different and has a different approach to shooting... Personally though, I wouldn't own a S&W semiauto- I just don't like them. Some of the hype is just hilarious though... almost as bad as the Springfield XD's which are nothing more than CZ's that have been rebadged:eek:

Actually the Springfield XD is based on the Croatian manufactured HS2000 - with the addition of a grip safety. It's a striker fired pistol in the same design world as Glock - many people do like the XD and they are a lot of value for the $$. The reviews have been solid in the gun press - and I have personally shot the 5" model in .45 ACP. Great peformer!

I shot one too- Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it, not to mention the FTF's with hollowpoint ammo.

To answer FMRAM- I carry a Kahr P9/Glock 26 or a S&W 637. I shoot both Glock G34 and an Ed Brown Kobra in competion along with a Colt Python. For years my car gun was either a 4" Python or a 1911A1. I found the Glock to be extremely reliable and require the least maintenace of any gun I have ever owned... of course, I have just jinxed myself...:D

Sounds like a lemon. I've had an XD40 for 2 years and never had a single problem. All types of ammo, many conditions. And I'm more accurate with my XD than my 1911. Even my girlfriend can shoot the XD resonably well.

True story ... and I believe the Croatian CEO/"designer" was executed as a "war criminal" ... shooting from the hip here (no pun intended) ... heresay .... I didn't check out the facts. :)

A Springfireld XD is basically a Glock with "lipstick and eyeliner" ... both "point/shoot" similarly and the manual of arms is "similar".
