Ski Slope in the Desert

mkoch

I'm not driving fast, I'm flying low
My recruiter sent these to me a little while ago. It's an actual ski resort in Dubai, UAE. Oh the things I would buy if I owned a desert full of oil....

I can just imagine the conversation that led to this.

Arab Oil Exec #1: Hmmm...I'm bored with counting my money, what can I buy?
Arab Oil Exec #2: Well, I haven't seen snow before. Let's buy a ski resort.
Arab Oil Exec #1: Let's see, we're about $10 million short if we want that.
Arab Oil Exec #2: Just raise gas prices to $3 a gallon, the silly Americans won't know the difference.

Cool beans... I think there's an indoor ski resort somewhere in Japan too...

There WAS one in Japan (outskirts of Tokyo). Torn down in summer 2003. I was there in 1997, too many people, not enough space! Think it was largest of about 10 such indoor ski resorts. Australia has one, several in Europe.

They had a Discover Channel show about this thing - interesting. I think UAE are also the dudes that created a huge Palm tree shaped island just offshore. Talk about disposable income.

Aren't they also currently developing islands in the shape of different countries/continents off shore for ridiculous vacation homes and resorts? I've heard it's called "The World" or something like that.

As for the indoor skiing, it looks fricking boring. Skiing blue trails gets old after about 15 minutes

When it's 120 degees out, I doubt it's boring.

Where would one go to buy a ski suit there?... or skis...

Samsonite... I was WAY off!!
It's too bad the one outside of Tokyo (on the way to Narita) is gone but there is actually one kind of near Yokota Air Base...a bit farther from Atsugi. It is located next to the Seibu Dome (where the lions play) and it's just one long run like the one they took down. After Japan's economic "bubble" burst, I guess the indoor ski resort business went down the drain!

Anyways, the Seibu Dome one is only about a 30 minute drive from Yokota (even though it's only about 3 miles away) and I guess add about two hours to that from Atsugi... it is probably faster to get from Atsugi by train.

There's TONS of great places to ski in Japan --- Honshu and Hokkaido, of course. Skiing has been very popular with the "fashionable" Japanese. You know ... the one's who like to vacation in Hawaii, SFO, NYC, and LAX :) .

Stay away from the weekends and holidays (Japanese, of course), book early, and bring your OWN boots (or confirm well in advance for rental equipment) --- or suffer the consequences of having large Gaijin feet in the land of small Japanese feet.

I hear you on that! Best to get boots through Outdoor Rec on base if you don't have your own.

Ahhh...yes, the fashionable Japanese...we Gaijin stick out so well on the ski slopes with our different colored hats, jackets, pants, ect. Whereas the Japanese have a new outfit to ski in each season. Everything has to be new... tried to sell a hardly used pair of skis at a flee market in Hachinohe (near Misawa) once and no one would buy anything used when it came to sports! I miss Japan...

Yeah, they do ... and it's usually "uniform" .... :) Gotta' love the JAPanese and their "ways" ... the ULTIMATE conformity society. *sigh* I love that place --- they alway do what I tell them to do .... they never met my EX-wife. ;)

Skiing ... Japanese style ... no blonde Norwegians, here .... stupid Gaijin. :)

Yes! The uniform... indeed, gotta love it! :) I used to teach skiing to service members from Misawa up in northern Japan and I will always remember the sight of a clumsy American with duct tape to patch the holes in his jacket, falling down in a lift line of Japanese all wearing the same ski suites!:D All I could do besides laugh was go over, help him up, and continue to say "gomen, gomen" and "sumimasen" :)
