I tried to make it out to the Jax beach before the launch and ended up crossing the intercoastal as the thing went up. But it turned out well - traffic slowed down as everyone gawked at the spectacle to their right. The sky was so clear that I could track it for a while after the SRB separation.

The shuttle is the coolest bad idea this country has had in a long time. The next thing, that Apollo-redux whatever they're calling it...it's good that they're getting back to some actual exploration. Those pore SOBs at NASA, that whole organization really needs a good shot in the ass and something exciting to work towards. Moral seemed a bit low - even for engineers - the last time I visited my friend there and that was in 2007.

Geez.....that dosen't look any different from the Apollo modules. I guess form follows function again.

I want to go in a rocket. Space shuttles are cool but I like rockets. And with the space shuttle on its way out I'm excited to see the next generation of rockets.

The engineers actually went back to the Apollo drawings/hardware when designing much of this stuff...going to the museums and borrowing back the hardware when they couldn't locate the specs. That new lander looks beefier though - lots of tanks and what not. It’s likely that one of the two new vehicles is going to be taller than the Saturn 5 was. And it’s also pretty cool that we will get two launches on two consecutive days once the program gets underway. Those crawlers are going to get a workout. Did you all see that Dirty Jobs episode? It’s no joke, that thing is nasty on the underside – you get dirty just looking at it.

Who remembers this movie?

I HAVE that movie... on DVD... got it predominantly for the nostalgia value.
That and the nervous breakdown during the transit to Mars

The blunt ended Capsule design was Max Faget's baby (pronounced Fazay IIRC). Deemed simple and efficient for the needs of a single-use spacecraft.
New lander has large tanks for a weeklong stay. There was talk earlier in the program of using the descent stage tanks as a "wet workshop" but that never happened.
The Ares rocket family definitely rival the Saturn V in size and Power as its payload is significantly greater than its predecessor.

I don't see the difference between "going in a rocket" and "going in a space shuttle." They're both rocket-propelled on the way up - i.e: they're both rockets.

As for the way down, I think we can agree on which is the cooler approach (pun not originally intended, but embraced):
In once case, a pilot (usually a NA) dead-sticks the thing in a one-chance maneuver on a 17-degree glideslope. In the other case, you get hoisted up out of the drink or you smack into a desert somewhere.

I looked this up out of curiosity, not to correct, but Max Faget was the guy who came up w/ the escape tower concept and H. Julian Allen was the originator of the blunt-body reentry concept.
