Well, for anyone who has not been... Orosco Ridge is... interesting.
It was a lot of fun finding the ridge and driving up to the shooting area (4x4 not required... but you definitely need some good shocks and clearance!) So, it was fun getting to use the new jeep:
the shooting however, was not so great in my opinion. There were people EVERYWHERE in the shooting area, shooting in EVERY direction... some not using terrain as a backstop... some shooting with others in front of them. Lots of rednecks without shirts, shooting while displaying some interesting Third Reich tattoos. It'd be an OK place to unload some rounds if you have a rifle/shotgun or just dont care about trying to hit a target. But for the beginner trying to shoot a pistol, we couldn't get any closer than 50 feet to the target because people would shoot over us... and unless you were at 100 feet or more, there wasn't much "flat terrain" to teach proper stance on.
It's a fun "plinking" environment, but I didn't think it was too friendly for a learning environment. Anyway, here's a shot of the girl's stance on sloping terrain with a 75 foot shot... I didn't have much time to teach her properly, as we unloaded around 4 magazines before I just didn't feel comfortable with all the rednecks shooting ricochets off the refrigerators and boulders they were using as targets:
We camped aways away from the ridge, at Fry Creek campsite ontop of Mt. Palomar... and I cannot speak highly enough of it. It was beautiful, secluded... and nobody else was up there. Cooler because of the altitude... and just a great place. Plus, a 10 mile drive up the switchbacks to the top was really fun. I'll be looking for a good indoor range or environment to really teach her the basics in the next week or two.
