Does anyone have any experience with getting custom molded shoe inserts? Any issues with physicals or some rule saying that this is bad?

I've worn orthodics since college and all through my Navy career in every shoe / boot. Other than making sure you get the right size to fit your foot and orthodic no issue at all.

I've worn custom orthotics since I was in eighth grade. If I hadn't, I probably would've gotten a lot more injuries than I did, not to mention your average aches and pains, so having them is much better than the alternative if you really need them. Why are you getting them? Who said they were a good idea?

The only time needing orthotics or having flat feet becomes a problem is if you have rigid flat feet, which is more rare. Look up flat feet on wikipedia; it'll tell you what you need to know (at least in this instance).
 
Beware of doctors who tell you that it doesn't matter how uncomfortable the insert might be, as long as it's giving you support. It's not like he's the one who's gonna wear it on 5-mile runs.
 
My left foot is weirdly shaped with the arch and doesn't seem to even find a nice fit in a shoe (my right does). I usually aim for a real soft insert, but I can imagine that something custom made would be the best idea. I will try to find a good running store and get some good advice.
 
In that case, I'd actually say go talk to a podiatrist. It's amazing the difference it makes having your orthotics fitted and made correctly, and with an assymmetric issue like yours, it'd probably be more of an issue than mine was. Some shoe stores are pretty good, others aren't; podiatrists can be worth their weight in gold.
 
Concur on the podiatrist. In addition to being a heavy, flat footed pronator (sp?) I have a ton of scar tissue from some torn muscles in both my feet. Decent orthodics, created and fitted by a podiatrist, was my eventual solution after trying about everything else and they're the only thing that allowed me to run or even live free of constant foot pain.
 
Any idea how much a pain in the ass this could be trying to go through Tricare? Should I just try going on my own?
 
Just got my Orthotics via Tricare today! $300 that I didn't have to pay.

It took me a couple of trips to the Podiatrist before he referred me for custom orthotics. I was given some generic inserts and tried them for about 4 months with not help (I have Plantar Fasciitis), then I went back and he said it was time for customs. Just started wearing them today, quite a change and it will take a while to get used to. But all in all, it wasn't that much of a hassle to take care of via Tricare.
 
Tricare's not that big a hassle. I went through my dad's Tricare coverage while still a mid and asked my primary care doc to set up an appointment with a podiatrist to get my orthotics resized/updated, and I think I just had to pay a copay and for the orthotics themselves. It's not a big deal; there's a list of providers that work with Tricare, and while it's not all-inclusive, it's not bad.

Is it really that much of a change as in night/day? I have generic orthotics right now as prescribed by a podiatrist, and also haven't noticed much change . I was a little upset at the $60 price tag, so I wouldn't be keen on dropping 300, but I guess if it's worth it...?
 
And here I thought this thread was going to be about a bad joke about SWO's.
