Ok, so obviously the F-14 Tomcat is simply an incredible machine... always has been. So why are they phasing it out? Is it because of the JSF or what?

there's no doubt it's awesome, but it was made in the 70's. It's the had the longest service of any other navy jet, it's got to retire sometime. The F/A-18 superhornet is actually the jet that will be replacing it, and is as we type.

I believe so, the A6's were just transitioned out by the prowlers within 10 years weren't they? I may be wrong about the tomcat, that's just what the airshow anouncer (also an f-14 pilot) said when the f14 was doing it's tactical demo.

Prowler debuted in 70' Tomcat in 72'. If I'm not mistaken, and it seems the Prowler will be around for a little while after the 14 goes. Maybe he meant longest serving "Fighter".

that's probably it. wow, I never knew the prowlers were that old, and that they served along side the intruder, aren't their missions the same?

No, no, no... Intruder was a mud mover. Prowler's primary mission is electronic warfare (jamming, etc.).

The Prowler will be ugly and proud until about 2010 with the current projections. It is going to be replaced by the F-18 (big surprise) in the form of an EA-18G. We are going to strap the current jamming pods on the wings of a super and mod the backseat for the ECMO to jam with. While they look the same, the Prowler mission is completely different from the A-6, and like grandmaster said is a jammer. The 14's will definetly be gone before the Prowler is. And, as a bonus if you are in the Marines, you will fly the Prowler until the JSF comes on line by the current plan. (They will be getting our jets when we get the EA-18)
